WALZ -TELEVISION WRITER Tighter race forecast for fall battle New York--For the second year in a row, CBS has emerged as the king of the prime-time television, using a lethal combination of trashy but classy dramas like "Dallas" and "Knots Landing," pro­ vocative comedies such as "M'A'S'H" and "One Day At A Time" and rip-roaring adventure series as in "Magnum P.I." and "Dukes of Hazzard." Provided that the fall season kicks off on time in September, being that the writers and directors (like their acting counterparts of a year ago) have decided to picket for more wampum, CBS still looks as if it has a solid inventory of pro­ gramming to stave off any attempt by ABC and NBC to knock them off their Nielsen throne. But it won't be easy. Both ABC and NBC have finally put together strong development depart­ ments which are working around the clock to secure new properties and talent. Let us take a closer look at the fall prime-time scheme in order to point out the strengths and weaknesses of each network. Peter Barton Kevin Dobson Tuesday An ABC stronghold with "Happy Days" helping the network score good numbers right through the glossy caper series "Hart to Hart " NBC will come in second with its revamped sked showing the new "Father Murphy" series, "Quin- cy" and "Flamingo Road." CBS is offer­ ing "Simon and Simon," an offbeat detective series and a TV flick. This is CBS' achilles heel. Wednesday ABC got a scare when the "Angels" and "Eight is Enough" faltered, but "The Greatest American Hero" came to the rescue. With the addition of Lee Majors' "Fall Guy." cotipledl with the return of "Dynasty," the netyvork will win the evening. ABC's "That's In­ credible" should also begin to lose its luster, although "Monday Night Football" will continue to score a sizeable share. This leaves CBS in the driver's seat again with "Private Ben­ jamin" leading off the evening and en­ ding with "Lou Grant." a revamped "Mork and Mindy" leading into the hilarious "Best of the West," "Barney Miller," "Taxi" and the newsy "20/20 " CBS has a chance to beat out ABC it "Magnum P.I." gives enough lead-in'^strangth to "Knots Landing," which then kegues into the new "Jessica Novak" program NBC will be hurt as "Harper yalley," "Gabe and Guich," "Diff'renr Strokes" and "Gimme A Break" exhibit their weaknesses. "Hill St*eet-6lues" might do well in the latter part of the evening. Friday A CBS monoploy with "Dukes of Haz zard." "Dallas" and a new lusty drama called "The Vintage Years" starring Jane Wyman ABC will be left picking up the pieces with "Benson." "Open All Night," "Maggie" and "Living It Up" all going down to defeat Only "Strike Force" with Robert Stack has a chance of surviving. NBC offers a weak lineup of "Mickey Rooney," "Chicago Story" and "James Arness." Saturday The most uncreative evening in TV ABC will win with "King's Crossing," "Love Boat" and "Fantasy Island," with NBC coming in second with the "Man drell Sisters," "Maverick" and "NBC Magazine " CBS will be hammered, as they offer a revamped "Disney" and a movie.
