The an ticipation and excitement of the NBA college draft past, major league baseball has been put on hold, and we're still weeks away from the opening of pro football training camps. At least for the tennis afficionado, all is well. Wimbledon has begun and this year's event promises to be as memorable as any during the last 103 years of the tournament. Chris Evert Lloyd tiKback for her tenth Wimbledon, Bjorn Borg will defend his men's title, and of course Mac is back. Mac is John McEnroe, the brash, temperamental number two seed in the tournament and the chief threat to strip Borg of his title.. Bullven By Carl Moesche The presense of both men has already been felt. Borg, the calm and collect Swede, breezed through his opening match extending his Wimbeldon winning streak to 36 matches. McEnroe similiarly won in straight sets, defeating Wisconsin native Tom Gullickson, but not before his temper took control. Ranting and raving about Gullickson serve in the believed nreat to strip Borg ot nis a Gullickson serve in tt title.. third set that he believe Col berg Leads was long, McEnroe proceeded to call the chair umpire an 'incompetent fool' and was justly rewarded a penalty point. Enraged, McEnroe called for tournament referee Fred Hoyles who offered" no restitution, and likewise pinned a penalty point on McEnroe for his closing remarks. Storming around- the court, McEnroe kicked and broke his racket and he pouted like a deprived child for the remainder of the match. He lost the gaffie but he had not lost the war. This is McEnroe's stylfe clawing for every point and popping off at anyone who opposes him. His ability is unquestioned and his court antics are equally noticeable. In the championship match to come, look for a rematch of the tremendous battle waged between Borg and McEnroe last year. don't be surprised McEnroe isn't as behaved as he was then Be ready for the unex pected. But be sure to watch. You don't want to miss this one. Carl Moesche Borg But i T?K There's no better way to go out than on top. Just ask Dave Colberg who pitched a two-hit shutout in his finale to lead McHenry's American Legion baseball team to an easy 8-0 win over Lake-In- The-Hills at McCracken field last Monday. Colberg, who will i>e--two errors. Hfto fourth innings, his teammates wasted little time in scoring runs off the opposing pitcher. In the third inning, McHenry sent 10 men to the plate scoring five times on three hits and two walks, while also capitalizing on •To Wi n joining the United Startes Marine Corps, allowed only five walks while striking out 10 batters. It was his third complete game of the season and it was by far his best outing. While Colberg gave up but a single in each of the second With one out, jofin~B&2ftn doubled and then scored the first run of the game when Joe Bauml reached on an error. Bauml then scored on Dave Maurer's double. * He then scored the third run of the inning as John Doessel reached on an error. Following a walk to Bob Greve, Tim Evans singled home both runners and McHenry lead 5-0. In the fourth inning, Maurer collected another run batted in as he singled home Bauml who had doubled with one out.. The final two runs were tallied in the sixth frame when Bazan and Bauml both scored on an errgr, after they had reachedon an error and a fielders choice, respectively. Lake-In-The-Hills had its share of scoring op portunities, but Colberg repeatedly pitched his way out of a jam. He got stronger as the game wore on and he retired the last 10 batters that he faced in order. McHenry collected six hits in the contest with Maurer being the only player with two. He had entered the game as the team's leading hitter with a batting average of 522.
