Farm Program Covers Weather Damaged Crops Susan A. Maraccini, ac ting county executive director of the McHenry C o u n t y A g r i c u l t u r a l Stabilization and Con servation service, says farmers who accurately report crop acreages and s i g n a n a p p l i c a t i o n f o r payment will be eligible to receive disaster benefits on their 1981 crops along with price support benefits ami deficiency payments. The 1981 program prov kW f o r d i s a s t e r p a y m e n t , ' • help farmers whose crops are severely damaged by weather conditions. "The abundant rainfall here in McHenry county could affect crop yields," Maraccini said. The program offers crop protection against drought, flood, hail, windstorm, in sect infestation, plant disease or any other type of disaster which occurs through no fault of the farmer Under the program, a wheat and feed grain farmer whose crop yield is less than BO percent of the established yield times the acreage planted for harvest may receive disaster payments " the production losses below 60 percent. Farmers will also be eligible for disaster payments if they are prevented from planting a program crop for harvest because of a natural disaster However, the planting of other later non- conserving crops must also have been prevented. The ASCS official said farmers should notify this office before they harvest or destroy crops or replant other crops when a disaster strikes Accurate acreage and production reports are necessary to assure full program benefits, she said. Producers who have elected to have part of their crop insurance premium paid by the Federal Crop Insurance corporation frr a program crop will not T.i eligible for disaster benefits on that crop Further details on payment provisions may be obtained from the local ASCS office Deaths DANIEL MILLER Daniel R. (Editor's note: This is another" 1n a series of especially written articles for McHenry County readers. Joseph Cools is a psychologist on the Family Service and Community Mental Health Center staff. This article is "Coping - Night Fears". For some relatively unexplained reason, most children, and many adults have a certain degree of fear of the dark. Most very young children refuse to enter a completely dark room, even if accompanied by an adult. Fear of the dark may be so intense in some children that they cannot overcome their terror, and must have suf ficient light in their room to be able to identify everything clearly. Often a dim light, that accentuates ..jferk shapes and shadows, serves only to increase the fears. Children can usually identify the fear as "mon sters", afraid that someone is hiding under the bed, lurking in the closet, or hovering close outside their window. As children get older, they may realize the fears are groundless, but are still left with the un controllable feeling of terror. In milder cases of night fear, children are able to do well in familiar surroun dings (their own bedroom) with no light. The underlying fear becomes a problem only when they are in unfamiliar surroundings, or have a nightmare (even if it's in their own bedroom). It is important for parents to realize that such behavior in their children does not indicate a serious disorder. It is also important to realize that the fear is real and not under conscious control of the child. Children, being the in telligent creatures they are, will often "use" the night fear as an excuse for delaying bedtime, or to make several trips out of bed to the living room. Seeing this happen, many parents begin to think that the night fear is nothing but a con job. This is not the case, and while parents have every right to insist on children obeying bed time rules, they should also provide night lights, and lots and lots of reassurance. There is a totally different phenomena in children in which the child awakers several times a week or even several times a night, screaming, panicked, and confused. These symptoms are not to be confused with la / THI OAS PUMP jH. USE ACCESSORIES SPARINGLY... When you use a battery- powered accessory you use extra gas. The alternator is activated to ftttore current to the battery when accesso ries are used. This extra work of the generating unit is paid for with extra gas burned to provide horsepower needed to turn the unit. the ordinary night fears or nightmares. If such symp toms persist, professional help is always indicated. <) JOHN L. FREUND FREUND FUNERAL HOMES •WONDER LAKE 7411 HANCOCK DR. • 15-729-0233 COOPER-FREUND •MARENGO - 205 N.
