"Those that make things happen, those that watch things happen, and those that wonder what the hell did hap pen." Two of the people who make things happen, fiddlers Frazier Moss (pictured) and Paul Chrisman, are the subjects of "Showdown at the Hoedown," the latest episode of "South bound," the new documentary series on southern folk music. "Showdown" will be seen on PBS, Thursday, July 30 * For generations the master fiddlers of the South have met together to listen, learn, swap tunes and tales and hound dogs, and to find out who's best in the area. Even today these fiddlers' contests are still popular in the South, and every year they at tract hundreds of fiddlers and thousands of onlookers in one ot the most colorful celebrations of American folk art. One of the most popular fiddling contests is the one held every July at Smithville, Tennessee, a small mountain town 50 miles east of Nashville. Here, almost in the shadow of the slick modern sound of "Music City," the unamplified guitars and droning fiddles offer a grassroots counterpoint to modern coun try music. Fiddlers gather around the courthouse, playing on streetcorners, in restaurants, in campers; craftsmen set up booths to sell their carvings, paintings, homemade banjos! young and old line up for the "buck dancing" contest. ' razier Moss a retired construct worker in his severities, r the local favorite and is back to defend the titie he won at iast y"?' S'fiineral. His main challenger is^Paui Chrisman. c young ."id'iler from Triune, Tennessee, who is ^uiet bearded, ina ir. his twenties The moment of truth comes at midnighf, on a crowded makeshift stage washed in the warm Tennessee night Fiddlers' contests have been a tradition in rural life since 1^36, when the first known fiddling contest took place in Virginia. Fiddling itself is a part of American history, Thomas Jef ferson and Davy Crockett were both fiddlers, as well as Henry Ford. As Frazier Moss practices in his home near Cookeville, Tennessee, for his "showdown," he touches up "Grey Eagle," one of his favorite tunes, and a favorite of Thomas Jefferson over 150 years ago. •CHECK LISTINGS FOR EXACT TIME tv coawuioe mrvkcs. inc. cancer U> World War II M.A.S.H. stashed in the Harta' manaion.
