STAFF PHOTOS-WAYNE GAYLORD Runners, numbering almost 200, begin the 7-Mile River Run that will find them crossing the Fox River twice. ••V • Ti i i i i , » « i i t x m a * Nearing the Ave mile mark on Riverside Drive, Tim Langford of Genoa City, Wis. has a slight lead on Darryl May and John Mclnerney both of McHenry, as auto traffic bottles up behind them. On Pearl Street with Just yards to go, Langford has a six second lead over Darryl May as he prepares to cross the finish line with a time of 36:09. \ EARL WALSH' So 1 Hear I have a faculty for choosing the slowest line in a bank. Am also a loser at the drive-in windows. One day I pulled into a line and it seemed I might have to spend the day there. When the opportunity presented itself, I changed over to a ' line where there were only two cars. Oh, brother! There I stood as I watched cars from my old line get finished and go merrily on their way. One thing to be said for drive-ins--nobody can peek over your shoulder. McHenry has quite a fight on its hands in getting ap proval to expand our hospital facilities. The City of Crystal Lake wants Elgin's Sherman Hospital to expand the recently erected Ambutal into a full hospital service. We don't blame our neigh bors for wanting a hospital, but they are 25 years behind McHenry in establishing such a facility to serve the - area, Employing hundreds of people with a lofty payroll, McHenry Hospital means a lot to this community. At present, the hospital is using buildings all over God's Green Acres. Ef ficiency and cost are big factors. McHenry has an over crowded hospital and wants to get approval for relocation and to meet the needs. It's a fight! Everybody has to get in there and start swinging. We saw a young man stop his bicycle and wait for the green light. Wish "Ace" Gaylord had been on the spot. Such a sight deserves a picture in the paper. Must let you in on a little secret. The hour is late on Tuesday night and this column has to be turned in after the sun comes up again. The secret is that I fell asleep in my big chair when I was supposed to be knocking out a column. With windows open and the temperature dropping, I awakened aware a cold spell has suddenly hit us after hot, hot days. Didn't think I would ever want to see a sweater again, but have one on right now. May have to drag out the long ones in the morning. The Chamber jof Com merce has made MJeHenry a busy little city ajs Fiesta- Marine Days are in full swing. _ There is action for all. Some take part. Others watch. Entertainment has been planned_for all ages. Come Monday morning and among the tired bodies will be members of the Police and Public Works Departments. It must make the P. W. boys tired just thinking of the clean-up job ahead. And -- speaking of getting tired -- I'm going to bed. Divot Dolls At MCC Golf for many of the McHenry Country Club gals on Tuesday, July 21 was akin to the weather - glum. A respectable number of net scores, however, were posted for the one day event of AB-CD-two-man team - low net. In AB Carol Cooney-70 and Mabel Smith-79 team netted a 149 for first place. In second place were Vi Tur- ner-81 and Georgette Lewis- 78 for net of 150. They were closely followed by Nell fidler-76 and Betty Smith-84 with a team net of 160. In CD Bernice Dolce-78 and Alta Gierke-73 team netted 151 along with Mary Mutchinsky-80 and Patti Smith-71 netting 1511. In second place for a team net of 157 were Myrt Johnson-80 and Dee Cheline-77. Third place had Pat MacDonald-76 and Marcy Wakitsch-82 team neeting 158. Under the weekly statistics in Class A, Carol Cooney shot a low gross of 85 for a net 70 while Betty Phalen low putted by rolling in 26 only for the 18 holes. Such an outcome indicates Betty's approaches have been finely honed to afford her ten one-putt greens. In Class B Laverne Harpling had low net of 75 and also low putts of 29. Class C found Joan Schloskey low netting with 74 while a tie between Bernice Dolce and Carol Bolger found each of them with 31 putts. In Class D a low net of 71 was posted by Patti Smith while Dee Chelini, playing her first 18 of the season, low-putted with 30 roll-ins. Witi^ 31 putts each a tie was posted between Fran Herrmann and Mary Mut- chinskv The only birdies posted for the day were those on number 14 and number 16 by our heroine Carol Cooney. A number of chip-ins and sinking approaches were executed, however. Lynn Schmidt got carried away and sank them from off the green on number eight, number two and number 16 - some sort of a record. Betty Phelan picked up the idea and sank her approach on number seven. Speedy Neumann did likewise on number four as did Ethel Koehler on number 11. Such encouraging goodies give hope to the gals in their .pursuit of the elusive pars. Letty Busscher claimed a loss of memory when asked about her game and Evie Castle wished that she had, having posted her worst round of the season to date. Straight-shooter Char Zwissler put the blame of her o.b.s. on number eight on her new clubs - not used to them yet. Bernice Dolce gave no reason for so much sand practice; nor did Betty Smith indicate why she found the trees so so at tractive on number 17. Micki Becker won the water-wings award hands down and gave ghe reason - but not for print. It happened at the creek on number eight. Next week the gals will have the opportunity to Beat The Champ as they match their scores with handicap against the club Champion, Carol Cooney And that should help pave the way into the 54-hole Club and Class championship which will begin the following week. Such plans should lead to Happy Golfing! Liz V Men's 16 Inch W 9 Intermatic Brake Parts 8 Enterprise R-M 8 Wm. Tonyan 7 R.D.
