Animals are being groomed and worked with to get them to stand properly. Those who are entering flowers or vegetables are no doubt hoping the rains will let up so that the fruits and blossoms will not be bruised. Since our family has been through it all in years past, we know it is an exciting and challenging time for these young people. We wish the best of luck to all on their projects. FORMER EXCHANGE STUDENT RETURNS Christer Niklasson of Goteborg, Sweden, has been visiting with his exchange parents, Paul and Althea Walkington, and renewing friendships with former classmates while a student at McHenry high school. In the afternoon she invited some of her school friends for games. It was a very hot day so water balloon games would have been very refreshing but with eight little girls, they were all very careful not to get any water on them - perfect little ladies. In the evening her cousins, uncles and aunts and grandparents were all there to wisn her a happy birthday. Michelle really enjoyed her day. After the parties, the family enjoyed a few days vacation camping at Yogi Bear-Jellystone park. This was a real treat for all. There were hayrides with Yogi Bear; Yogi, Cindy and Boo Boo Bear wandered through the park, stopping for hand-outs for their ' baskets to everyone's en joyment. Michelle and brother* Mickey had great fun swimming. Little Joey and parents, Mike and Nancy, completed the family group. The cotton crops that Bev was talking about at that time are doing very well; it has grown much taller this year because of those early rains and is now almost shoulder high and folks down that way are very thankful for those early rains; it means a mucn better crop. In fact, Bev sent us pic tures of the tall well producing cotton and a giant squash. The specimen weighed 73 pounds and measured 82 .inches around. This particular variety has been known to grow to as much as 300 pounds. The thing that amazes the Ackermans is that large fields of cotton are all hoed by hand, even large fields like John Hogans. You see the young and old out there hoeing, men and women (and the women have "Holly Hobby" type bonnets on). Another thing that amazes them so much is that you see the older folks out dancing up a storm on Saturday night, - not just once in awhile, but every Saturday. Bev says she guesses the hard work, and the fun they have on Saturday, is why they all live so long. The Ackermans have lots of peach trees, so they have their own, but Bev says she sure is getting tired of doing them up. She wondered when they first went to Texas why people left the grapes and peaches fall on die ground; now she knows, they got tired of doing them too. Pecans also are plentiful down their way and they loved them but now aren't as thrilled about shelling and pickin' the meat from the shells. They send their best to all and said that if they stay too long they'll really become southerners like all the rest. CAMP RETURNEES Lee and Scott Miller returned from Camp A l g o n q u i n , n e a r Rhinelander, Wis. on Saturday, July 25, where they had spent bettering their reading. They attended Camp Algonquin which is a reading camp for boys from seven years on up to students , attending high school i^ order to better their feeding skills to enter college. The fun things included lots of crafts, archery, boating, skiing, and other interesting diversions. Now that's the way to attend summer school.
