WOODSTOCK -- Entertainment, educational exhibits and a chance to relax in a country atmosphere are expected to attract upwards of 100,000 people when the 33rd annual McHenry County Fair is presented here Aug. 5-9; The fairgrounds are located on the east side of Woodstock on Illinois 47. Parking is available on the grounds at no cost. All grandstand programs also are free after payment of either the $3 single admission or $8 for a season ticket. Special prices are offered children and senior citizens. During the day judging dominates much of the activity, while the evenings are devoted to professional en tertainment on four of the five nights. Two nights are devoted to the demolition derby -- Friday and Sun day, Aug. 7 and 9. Country-western singing stars' appeal in the past prompted the fair board to sign up two shows featuring name personalities for 1981. Tommy Cash and the Tomcats will present two shows (6:30 and 8:30 p.m.) Thursday, Aug. 6, while Bobby Bare will be the star of two shows Saturday, Aug. 8. The traditional opening night attraction since the fair's revival in 1949 continues. A beauty pageant will feature young women from 14 com munities vying for the Miss McHenry County 1981 crown now worn by Jane Titus of Cary. Another royalty contest involves 4-H members. A 4-H king and queen will be announced during 4-H activities before the grandstand Thursday, Aug. 6. Nikki Payne and Ben McConnell will crown their successors. Balloting among the county's 1,200 4-H members will take place during the first two days of the fair. Candidates for king and queen have been nominated by the Extension Council. Fair Secretary Dorothy Schultz reports entries in virtually all open class departments are higher than a year ago. The single exception is in poultry with approximately the same number of entries as in 1980. The an tique show is a major attraction. Judging the first day will enhance its appeal since fair visitors will have a chance to learn early in the fair entries judged most outstanding in the Antique show. Schultz said the fair board is offering $35,000 in prize money for open class, tractor pulls, harness racing and other specialty attractions. Harness racing has been a stable attraction at the fair throughout, and this year a new feature is being in corporated Thursday afternoon, Aug. 6. McHenry County trained and driven horses with lifetime earnings not ex ceeding $10,000 will be featured in a special race. This will be for pacers, Jack Hayes, fair treasurer and long time racing enthusiast, said. Hayes said both the indoor and outdoor exhibit space has been rented, assuring a large variety of exhibits for visitors to see. Among them are educational presentations by com munity organizations. Charles Weingart, a McHenry farmer who is the fair president, said the livestock auction at noon Saturday, Aug. 8, and the antique tractor pull the next day will be,special events of in terest to both rural and city guests. Two divisions in the talent contest to be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday Aug. 7, will incorporate local personalities in an entertainment type show at the Hansen Pavilion. The winners will compete in contests to be conducted in January during the Illinois Association of County Fairs annual meeting. One major change finds the Aug. 8 horse show incorporating 36 events in an all-day open horse show attraction. umamm , THE MOST COMFORTABLE WALKING, WORKING, PLAYING, STANDING, SHOPPING TRAVELING SHOES IN THE WORLD. letters Style Shown: WALKING LADY ALL LEATHER Colors: Cornel, Brown, Navy, Rust Suede MAIN uun AN f 31AE,E,1 oe Snop 233 Main Si.
