Conser­ vative estimates reveal that over 20 million Americans (one out of every ten), adults as well as children, experience some degree of hearing loss. Yet, there is help available. Many people with an iden­ tified problem have been helped medical- ly, surgically, or through the use of a hearing aid. Your loss of sensitivity to sound may be so gradual that you will not even realize that a problem exists. The causes of hearing loss are varied, and many of them are medically important to your health. Most commonly, however, the causes include the aging process, heredity, medical problems and prolonged exposure td'loud noise. How do I know if I have a hearing problem? Generally, there is little or no physical discomfort and there are no visible signs of a hearing problem.
