V A NI I I ' IM , PAWS ANIMAL WELFARE ASSOCIATION P.O. Box 205 * Crystal Loke. Illinois 60014 *(815)459-2641 ByPattiCane A recent magazine article indicated that too often animals are being given no protection while movies are being made. Cruelty to animals is causing grave concern to the American Humane Society and to the Humane Society of the United States. Dogs have been staked down as bait for filming of some scenes and docile wolves and bear, required to show ferocity, are coached with a beating. Many directors have ignored the repeated requests from the American Humane Society to station a humane officer on the set. Helping Paws asks that you send for a list of the 38 movies rated "Unac ceptable" by the American Humane Society in the last five years. Write to the American Humane Association, P.O. Box 77, Hollywood, Califor nia, 90028. The American Humane Society will also pass on your views regar ding the use of animals in movie making to the Motion Picture Association of America. All pet adoptions must be validated by the signing of a contract along with the adoption fee which includes the cost of the spay or neuter ;ery from a vet of HP's choice or a deduction from the cost of the surgery if done by a vet of your cri^ce. When adopting a pet through Helping Paws please, for your future referece, keep name, address and phone number of the person from whom you adopted pet. (SERVES FOUR OR MORE) One of the feature at tractions at each McHenry County fair is the Livestock Auction where buyers and bidders gather. Hog, sheep and cattle shown by fair exhibitors go on the auction block starting at noon, Saturday, Aug. 8. "It's a good chance to fill your freezer with quality meat and at the same time help young people with their 4-H project," says Llovd Getzelman, chairman of the fair's Livestock Auction committee. Last year the auction netted $115,000, and this money paid to 4-H and FFA boys and girls enabled them to pay for their 1980 ex penses, have money to buy their 1981 projects, and to help go to school or expand their farming interests. A buyers' appreciation picnic is planned Aug. 12 at Building D, with a hog roast served from 6 to 7 p.m. Buyers and their families are invited to attend this free picnic. Committee members include Marie Slater, Bruce Olbrich and Lloyd Get zelman. PAGE 5 -PLAINm: U.I K - FRIDAY. JULY 31,1961 D.W.I. Of the 386 arrested, 332 were white males. 13 were female, 69 were under 21 years old, 41 were involved in traffic accidents and 210 refused to take the breath test and had their licenses suspended for three months.
