Calhoun, Box 588 Woodstock, IL 60098 (815) 338-4511 (Pub. July 29, Aug. 5 & 12, 1961) No. 810851 FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 30, 1981) Nick Frepnd, local representative for the Cities Service Oil company, has purchased the corner property from R.I. Overton and has started work on the construction of a service station, the contract for the work being held by Henry J. Schaefer. The prizes were awards for correctly solving and writing the solution to a mystery story which was read over the radio for several weeks and the local girl is to be complimented upon her ability shown in winning a prize in this contest. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the flies of July 31, 1941) McHenry county sent 30 of its young men to a Chicago induction center to receive their final examinations before being inducted into the U.S. Army. James A. Thompson was the only McHenry man to be sent with the draft. Eugene H. Letterman of Spring Grove, Alvin Miller of Ringwood and John H. Padgett of Rich mond were also listed. Due to the generosity of the Johnsburg fielders, the Shamrocks had an easy time swamping the Indians by a score of 104. Larkin pitched a beautiful game for eight innings settting the Tribe down with only two scratch hits. Nary a Johnsburg runner reached second during the span. "Big Jim" weakened in the ninth when he was touched for three hits. These combined with a walk, two hit-batsmen and a Shamrock miscue gave Johnsburg four runs. TWENTY-FIVE YEARSAGO (Taken from the files of August 2, 1986) While most folks that the widening of street will be a marked improvement for McHenry, most of them have expressed very sincere regret at beautiful losing the which line the highway for several blocks. With so many years required before the towering trees readied their impressive stature, their removal was noted with a real sense of loaf. The Nelson L. Davis company moved this week from Chicago to the former home of the McHenry State bank at 517 Main street The company is an engineering and contracting firm specializing in coal (reparation plants. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the flies of July 30, 1958) During a tour of East campus high school, School District 158 President James Althoff told the 30 visiting members of the Citizens Advisory council * to McHenry County College that the board had agreed on a sale price of $3,700,000. That figure is estimated sufficient to construct an addition to West campus which would accommodate the entire student body. The college is considering East campus as a site for a per manent facility for M.fc.C. A representative of the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad admitted although crews had received detailed instructions on how and when to spray weed killer, they ignored temperature and wind conditions, causing widespread damage to growth on private property near the tracks.
