TV C0MPUL0C SERVICES INC CHECK LISTINGS FOR EXACT TIME USA inks Hubie New York--Former National Basketball Association "Coach of the Year" Hubie Brown has joined USA Network as a color analyst on the exclusive Thursday Night NBA series. In a separate agreement, Brown has signed to serve as host of USA Network's new "Scholastic Sports Academy" series, a sports instructional show for youngsters that will make its net work debut in October. USA's Thursday Night NBA series will offer 40-45 regular season games plus playoffs during the 1981-82 campaign. Brown will work the games originating from the eastern section of the country. Eddie Doucette and Steve Jones will handle play-by-play and color, respectively, on west coast contests. Jon MfcGlocklin and Keith Erickson will handle color chores for selected games. "Hubie Brown's coaching record speaks for itself. He's a great tactician and is familiar with today's players," says Jim Zrake, executive producer/sports for the network. "Hubie's ex pertise lends itself to this position. He should provide our viewers with fresh insight into the constantly changing NBA game." On "Scholastic Sports Academy," Brown will teach the finer points of the game to youngsters 6^14. Pro players will appear as guests to assist Brown in these informal clinics, which will be taped in August at Kutsher's Country Club in Monticello, New York. The first original 13 half hour "Scholastic Sports Academy" shows will focus on basketball and will air Saturdays. ^ For the past 12 years, Brown has conducted a minimum of 20 clinics each summer throughout the United States and Canada for high school and college coaches. His own coaching career began at St. Mary's High School in Little Falls, New York in 1956. Following head coaching stints at two other high schools, Brown became assistant coach at William and Mary in Virginia in 1967 and was named the top assistant at Duke University the following season. In 1972, Brown left Duke to join the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks as an assistant to head coach Larry Costello. During Brown's two seasons with Milwaukee, the club captured the Midwest Division title and took the Boston Celtics to the seventh game of the 1974 league championship series. In 1975, Brown joined the Kentucky Colonels of the old American Basketball Association as head coach and guided the team to its only league championship. Brown remained with Kentucky through the 1975 season, after which the league fold ed and the club disbanded. In 1976, Brown began a five-year head coaching stay with the NBA's Atlanta Hawks. Following 3 rebuilding year in 1976-77, Brown guided the Hawks to the league playoffs in '77-1Q and was named NBA "Coach of the Year" by the media. In 1979, he received a similar honor from CBS/Chevrolet after the Hawks stretched defending champion Washington to seven games before falling in the second round of the playoffs. In 1980, Brown guided the Hawks to 50 victories and their first division championship in a decade. TV cowutoe s<evicts, mc
