Just east of the city of McHenry living at his beautiful farm home may be found a violin maker, John F. Claxton, who has com pleted three very fine violins during the jaast three years and plays' them all most proficiently, much to Ms own ^STwho hear him. ^ Arrangements have been perfected for two great days and evenings at St. Mary's, church lawn. This is the annual Kirmiss festival, which is held each year in honor of the church's patron saint. At a meeting of the board of superviors of McHenry county, it was decided that the county would foot its own poor and pauper bills and not depend on the various townships to do so, as prescribed in a new law passed by the last state legislature. Poor bills amounting to $1,408.68 were ordered paid by the county board. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of August 14, 1941). The most disastrous fire in recent years in McHenry occurred early Monday morning when the McHenry C o u n t y F a r m e r s Cooperative association, commonly known as the Farmers Mill, on route 120 burned to the ground. It is believed the building was struck by lightning at about 4:30 a.m. The large frame building and its contents were destroyed within two hours. John A. Bolger, manager, reported that the mill was stocked with the greatest supply of grain it ever held. A new business firm, Freund's Dairy, was inaugurated when it made its first delivery of milk to approximately 58 families in McHenry and vicinity. The dairy, just recently com pleted, is located about two miles north of McHenry on route 31 and is owned and operated by John Freund. Managing the production is William Brogan. The Grace Carey place on Green street, south of the high school, has been pur chased by Mrs. Charles Weldt and the latter will take possession next week. TWENTY-FIVE YEARSAGO (Taken from the files of August 16, 1956). Illinois Bell Telephone company has contracted to purchase land in McHenry as the future site of a dial telephone building. The property is at the southwest corner of Pearl and Court streets, just north and west of the present central office. Some family owes a big "thank you" to Dave and Bud Gende for the safety of their family pet. The Gende family, who live on S. Riverside drive, heard the howling and barking of a dog in the early hours. When it became light enough, they saw what they thought was a puppy clinging to the seawall across the creek. Young Dave and Bud scrambled out of bed and rowed their1 boat across. They found a full grown German Shephard so heavy that it was necessary for both of them to lift him to shore. The dog had become exhausted, and seemed afraid to loosen his hold on the wall and swim across. On dry land, he shook himself, wagged his appreciation and started on his way home. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the flies of August 18, 1971). Mr. and Mrs. Mark Hopkins and their four children recently departed from Washington in ternational airport for Belgrade, Yugoslavia. Hopkins, 39, former Soviet affairs specialist of the Milwaukee Journal, has been named by the U.S. Information agency to establish a Voice of America news bureau in Belgrade. As a correspondent working out of Belgrade, Hopkins will cover news of East Europe and U S,S R. for broadcast by the Voice of America. Both McHenry high school graduates, Mr. Hopkins is the son of Mrs. Emil Hin- spater and the late Walter Hopkins. The former Marijean Doherty, Mrs. Hopkins is the daughter of Mrs. Paul J. Doherty and the sister of Mayor Donald Doherty of this city. Miss Dawn Douglas was chosen McHenry's Little Miss Peanut. PAGE 17 • PLA1NDEALER - FRIDAY. AUGUST 14.1981 \ As newspaper folks gathered around Publisher Larry Lund's pool, the an swer to the old adage, "The last one in is a--" was either "lucky" or "old". Nobody cared much as long as he was overlooked when the mischievous merrymakers carried off reluctant vic tims, who were then pushed or persuaded into the pool. Whether the clothing was appropriately a bikini or inappropriately street attire, didn't seem to matter. Law Requires Nursing Home Abuse Reports TOP DECK 1232 N. Thompson signed legislation Monday requiring nursing home employees, doctors and hospitals to report any cases of abuse or neglect in nursing homes. House Bill 1118, signed at Golden Age day at the Illinois State fair, requires that the reports be made to the Department of Public Health for further in vestigation. The legislation provides safeguards to nursing home residents in addition to those found in the Nursing Home Care Reform Act of 1979. Under this legislation, employees not only will required to report evidence of abuse or neglect to the home's administrator, they also will have to notify state public health officials. The reporting requirement extends to doctors, hospitals, coroners, social workers, nurses, staff of stat^% agencies and others wlwK may see nursing home abuse or neglect.
