PAGE2J tcoi by Joey Sasso CONFIDENTIAL REPORT: Soap opera fans across the na tion were stunned when Tony Geary, the runaway favorite to cop the Best Actor award, was snubbed at the Emmy show. As the winner was being named, photographers clustered around Geary, who plays lusty Luke Spencer on ABC's "General Hospital," to record his reaction. Then the crowd of 500--many of whom were shouting "We want Luke"--fell into a shocked silence as it was announced that the award was going to Douglas Watson, star of NBC's "Another World." As Watson mov ed to the podium, surprised TV cameramen left their cameras trained on Geary's face. Even as he accepted the award, Watson himself expressed surprise that he had been chosen. "It was a tremendous shock," he said. "I was sure I wasn't going to get it. I thought it was going to be Tony Geary." Ironically, Geary, 33, became the darling of about 10 million "General Hospital" fans when macho Luke raped Laura Baldwin, who is played by Genie Francis. Before "General Hospital" he had small roles on two other soaps, "Bright Promise" and "The Young and the Restless." He is regularly swamped with more than 1,000 fan letters a week. TV BACKSTAGE: Ernest Hemingway's "The Best of Friends" will be telecast as a Liberty Mutual Dramatic Special over a network of 100 stations during the week of August 22. The one-hour drama stars Peter Graves, Carol Lynley and Alex Cord. The story about,a triangle of lovers who raft down the treacherous Colorado River was written by Hemingway as "The Three Day Blow." The television adaptation by Venable Herndon is retitled "The Best of Friends." The special was filmed entirely on location on the Colorado River in Arizona and in and around Boulder City in Nevada. Peter Graves, who star red in "Mission: Impossible" on television for six years, plays the role of Nick Adams, a famous Hemingway character. Carol Lynley portrays his wife Marjorie, and Alex Cord plays "the other man," Bill Saunders. "The Best of Friends" is the sixth in a series of Liberty Mutual dramatic specials. TV CLOSEUP. "One Day At A Time" star Pat Harrington says he won't be back on the set until the CBS bosses in crease his salary. Harrington, who plays the kooky janitor Schneider un the show, now gets $32,000 an episode for a grand total of more than $*50,000 for a season of 24 shows, But Harrington's holding out for $40,000 an episode, the same pay as co-star Bonnie Franklin... Gene Kelly, who suffered two bruised ribs when he slip ped after taping a recent variety show, seems to have recovered nicely. Kelly, 68, will film a dance number with young Russian ballerinas at ^he Korov Ballet School in Leningrad for a TV show to be aired next Christmas . . . Americans will certainly sit i#> and take notice when luscious Loni Anderson assumes a new TV role--she's set to teach sex on daytime TV. The "WKRP" sex symbol will tell all on a new show, "The Body Human," says Michael Ogiens, vice-president of daytime and children's programming for CBS.
