PA2LL in the spotlight it Giorgio Tozzi and Sharon Daniels sine a final, loving duet in "The Most Happy FeNa." "The Most Happy Fella" to encore on Great Performances "The Most Happy Fella," one of theater's most celebrated musicals, makes its special summer encore appearance on Great Performances, Monday, August 24, over PBS.* Giorgio Tozzi and the full Broadway cast star in this revival of Frank Loesser's 1956 sensation. Sidney Howard's drama, "They Knew What They Wanted," is the foundation on which Frank Loesser built his most am bitious work. Loesser has written a love story complicated by deceit and infused with homespun comedy. Tony (Giorgio Toz zi) is a middle-aged California vineyard owner who falls in love with the waitress Rosabella (Sharon Daniels) whom he's seen in San Francisco. He woos her by letter, but when she asks him for his picture, Tony sends her one of his handsome young foreman Joe (Richard Muenz) instead. The photo convinces Rosabella; she agrees to join Tony in the Napa Valley and become his bride. Her arrival is a tragic comedy of errors. She is ashamed that she's been duped, but before she can flee, the townspeople carry in a seriously injured Tony: he had an auto accident on the way to meet his beloved. The distraught bride goes through with the marriage, although she turns to Joe for comfort in the ceremony's traumatic aftermath. The lovers' agony is eased by their comic sidekicks Cleo and Herman (Louisa Flaningam and Dennis Warning), two tall Texans who stop the show when they sing the praises of Dallas in "Big D." At the musical's end, Rosabella vows her love for Tony, making him "The Most Happy Fella." The program, taped live at Detroit's Michigan Opera Theatre, is a production of WNET/THIRTEEN, New York, and is made possible by a grant from EXXON and by public television sta tions. It originally aired in March, 1980. •CHECK LISTINGS FOR EXACT TIME. TV COMPULOQ IMVKtS.
