Walz ftl Red" looks to bright future New York--The most successful of all the active coaches in basket ball--William (Red) Holzman--has had his contract with the New York Knicks renewed for two more years. Holzman, who had been at the New York helm from December of 1967 through the culmination of the 1976-77 campaign before announ cing his retirement, returned to skipper the Knickerbockers in November of 1978. Last season he enjoyed the fifth-winningest record in his 17 seasons as a pro coach when the club posted a 50-32 log in regularly scheduled play. Terrific record Over the course of his coaching lifespan, Holzman has achieved 663 regular season triumphs in pro ranks--second only to the 938 vic tories compiled by Arnold (Red) Auerbach at Washington, Tri-Cities and Boston. Holzman, who played at Roches ter and Milwaukee in the now- defunct National Basketball League in the years which immediately followed World War II, established a club record with 54 victories in his first full season as Knickerbocker skipper in 1968-69. And a year later he guided the New York team to its first championship, posting the club's high mark for total wins with 60. Included in those triumphs was a run of 18 successive victories--an NBA record at the time. After piloting the Knickerbockers to a record 32 home triumphs in 1971-72, a season in which the team lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in the title round, Holzman again led the club to a championship (1972-73), scoring an unprece dented 20 successive wins at home during that drive. The team's defen sive average wound up a 98.2 and that was the NBA's best effort in the league in 16 years. "I feel the team is making pro gress," Holzman said recently. "We look for further improvement in the months ahead." The 1980-81 edition of the Knickerbockers was the youngest team the club had ever floored. Michael (Campy) Russell, obtained in a trade just prior to the start of the season, and Marvin Webster, who signed on as a free agent in 1978 after three seasons of pro ball, were the veterans. Ray Williams was in his fourth season as a pro and Michael Ray Richardson was mak ing his third go-round. Mike Glenn, a utility guard, was in his fourth campaign. Bill Cartwright, Larry Demic and Sylvester (Sly) Williams were making their second trip* around the pro circuit, while Reggie Carter, Mike Woodson and De- Wayne Scales were rookies. Since the close of the 1980-81 season, the Knickerbockers bol stered the backcourt with the ac quisition of veterans Randy Smith and Mike Newlin and look hopefully forward to the return of the veteran Toby Knight who missed all of last season as the consequence of a pre-season injury.
