Operation Prime Time, the quasi-television network made up of a consortium of independent stations across the continent, has enjoyed a "banner" year, so to speak. Producer Bob Banner's rock 'n' roll video concept "Solid Gold," a weekly one-hour countdown program, has been a smashing success. It's a lively and power-packed series which has eclipsed the popularity of "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert" by leaps and bounds. It is also considered a lethal counter-programming weapon against network competi­ tion and other imitative rock shows such as "Casey Kasem's Top Ten." The format is quite simple. The show opens with a new group warbling their first chart-busting hit as the hostess of the show, Dionne Warwick, is introduced. Warwick is an amiable hostess, but there's been talk that the program could use a less temperamental headliner such as Andy Gibb. Nevertheless, the show then moves very rapidly into showcasing the rock 'n' roll talents of today and yester­ day without missing a beat. Perhaps the most outstan­ ding, if not the best, feature of the show, is the "Solid Gold" dancers, a vivacious group of youngsters who per­ form original movements as the top ten songs of the week are counted down. As a whole, it would appear that Mr. Banner has taken the best aspects of such legendary rock series as "American Bandstand," "Hullabaloo" and "Shindig" and injected his own contemporary fire-brand .oncepts which virtually cross all age barriers. A show like this can go on forever, but hopefully comedian Marty Cohen and Wayland Flowers will disappear sometime soon.
