By Bob Bajek SHAW MUM A NCWS SCRVICI Vandals in the Village of Wonder Lake have stolen, damaged and defaced six road signs in the area, presenting a hazard to drivers, according to Village President Jim Rachel. "The main problem isn't just the replacement pf the signs, but the hazard that missing signs present to motorists unfamiliar with Wonder Lake," said Rachel. "It's very dangerous to steal a stop sign or any other road sign, since people not familar with the Wonder Lake area would not know that there was a hazardous intersection and run though the intersection, possibly having an accident." There were three stop signs stolen from the three- street intersection at Wondermere and Thompson roads, one of which later was found off the Thompson road bridge at Nippersink Creek. Three other signs were vandalized at individual locations on Wondermere and Thompson roads about a half mile from the three-way stop intersection. Ten signs in Wonder Lake have been replaced with a pressure treated wooden post sunk in concrete. The posts are nearly $2 less expensive than the original metal signposts, but are less susceptible to bowing by four-wheel drive vehicles. Illinois law holds the damage, removal or defacing of road traffic signs as a felony. "Anyone seeing in dividuals messing around with signs, not just in Wonder Lake but anywhere, should contact law en forcement officials since it is a crime to deface, destroy or remove road signs," Rachel said. Wonder Lake officials suggest that anyone who sees a road sign being damaged or stolen in the village to take down the iicense plate number and vehicle description of the subject involved and call the village at 728-1226. Remembering When... Swimming season is almost over for 1981, but this old postcard showing bathing beauties of another vintage will serve to remind us of summer fun on the Fox. Hie exact year is not known, but bathing suit styles and the appearance of the shoreline Indicate It wap leng ago. Know {J J sinr S I M alfier Identify an "anvil top" of a thunderhead. In which direction does this top move? Thunderheads, which occur so often in summer skies, sometimes rise to 50,000 feet in our latitude and are the most spectacular of clouds. These thunder- heads level off at the very top, producing a flat-topped "anvil." This anvil spreads for ward; that is, it moves out ahead of the path of the storm cloud providing a directional signal to those who can observe it high above. Often, however, it cannot be seen except at great distance because of the lowhanging line squall moving ahead of the thunderhead near the ground, obscuring view. The anvil top, as it spreads out, produces cirrus densus cloud, or what is called false cirrus, because it does not carry with it the meaning of normal cirrus formations. At the anvil top of a thunderhead, the temperature is likely to be 50 degrees below zero. A Failure A new novel is des cribed by the critics as being sincere, refreshing and clean. The author is in despair. -Punch. Worse She-Aren't we fools? He-Kindly speak in the singular. She-Aren't you a fool? Morrow, N.T.] The case of the umbilical cord is routine. Keep it clean by either sponging or gently wiping with a slightly dampened sterile cotton ball dipped in a mild antiseptic. Do this from one to three times a day, depending upon the advice of your doctor. Continue until the area is completely healed. Covering the umbilical cord is not usually recommended. If you use disposable diapers, fold the plastic at the waist away from the skin so that the air can dry the navel. In many newborn infants, the base of the navel looks swollen. This is a type of hernia or a slight separation of the abdominal muscles. The hernia may puff up as the baby struggles or cries, but it usually will not cause pain. This condition, if small, will gradually disappear of its own accord in the first few years of life as the baby's abdominal muscles become stronger. It is not uncom mon, either, for a boy baby's scrotum to look swollen from a kind of water sack that gradually disappears without treatment. Unusual swelling may be a real hernia, which, unlike the hernia at the navel area, needs prompt medical attention. In the months ahead, your baby's soft, smooth, silken skin will be your pride and joy. Skin color, of course, will vary. If it has a yellowish tinge to it, this could indicate a slight jaundice condition, which is quite normal in many newborns and clears up by itself as the baby takes more fluids. True Anyone who thinks that this is a man's world probably doesn't under stand a lot of other things, either. -Record, Columbia, S. C.
