INTERVIEW The Tubes, currently em barked on a national tour to last through Christmas, have done something recently .the/d not done before in their offesr: become commercially iuc- cessful. Sure, everyone knew of Fee Waybill (alias Quay Lude) and his band of crazies; their live shows were underground legends. But this is the first time they have put an album--and a single--in the Top 40. EAV: So, how does it feel for the elitist Tubes to be known by everyone who owns an AM radio? FOB Waybill: I love it. You think I wanted to remain obscure for the rest of my life? For some reason, people think bands like the idea of being a cool, obscure, underground band. I can tell for a fact that nobody in that position likes it. EAV: No one wants to starve in a garret and retain his artistic integrity? Foo: Not a chance. I don't want to have to go back to my day job. And I don't think we've had to give up our "artistic in tegrity." We had to break out of this small following of people and start selling a lot of records or we'd be history. It's that simple--simple economics. EAV: Should I title this article "The Tubes Sell Out"? Foo: "The Tubes Grow Up"--that's a better title. Listen, they don't call it Show Art, do they? They call it Show Business. In this business*-you have to sell records. Our live shows ... it's hard to outrage people anymore. Do I have to kill chickens now, or what? If I really killed chickens every night I'd probably outrage peo ple. Anybody with absolutely no talent can do that. But to be sophisticated and to be in teresting and to put on a show that people can enjoy for two hours--that's tough. EAV: Is your new live show still a notorious Tubes extra vaganza? Foo: We spent a fortune and we have a set that's without a doubt the most high-tech set in rock and roll. We're taking a more escapist approach now; jumping on the "Raiders of the Lost Ark" bandwagon. We played devil's advocate long enough. We got bored with be- jng paring cynjeist gll the time. EAV: How are your hipper- than-thou fans taking this tur naround? Foo: Those people didn't buy our records. If they had wanted to support the Tubes, we wouldn't have had to care about AM radio. This band had been around six years and had five records--all stiffs. A year ago we were ready to break up. If this is rock and roll, we said,. it's time to get up and go to work. Now, we're booked'non- stop and at the end of the deyj. feel completely shagged oi|p" and totally satisfied. '/ ALBUM REVIEWS Robbio Pstton Distant Shores (Liberty) The nicest thing about his gentle pop- debut isn't the production ty Christine McVie (which is ex cellent) or the guitar work ty Lindsay Buckingham (ditto). The nicest thing here is the lov songs. Patton writes. lyrii about human, adult, falterir deep and--above all--possit love. All of which is reassuring. ; Stiv Botors Disconne (Bomp) Considering that Bate came from a band called Dead Boys,, and that the albu cover features a fragile yoii about to commit suicic Disconnected is a remarkal hopeful piece of work. Puftk fans expecting slam-bam chops and a relentless beat will surprised at the accessibilit/of the# record and its musifcal sophistication. An unexpected pleasure, rv coswutoe scavictt. mc SPRING GROVE 815 6756666
