An Profile v > • wwm--' j * Miss America looking forward to next career by Matt Messina Last September, an operatic singing career was a dream (or Susan Powell, a 21-year-old brunette from.0k City, Oklahoma. Now, nearly a year after being crowned Miss America 1981, the career seems almost a reality for the young brunette, who will crown her successor in the climactic finale of this year's Miss America Pageant, to be televised live on NBC Saturday, September 12. Said Susan; "I am going to start my operatic career in Seattle in the fall, singing the role of Adele in 'Die Fledermaus.' From there, who knows? There will be other auditions and, of course, I'll continue to study my music every day. But my career seems to be right in front of me." Last year at this time, an anxious but determined Susan was working hard practicing her selection for the Pageant, the humor-filled Lucy's aria from Gian Carlo Menotti's "The Telephone." Said Susan; "At that time, I felt more anxious than excited, knowing that I faced a once-in-a-lifetime situation and yet not really knowing what was going to happen. I really wanted to win. Still, I wanted to have a good time, and I did, too. But when I was working, I was concentrating totally on what I was doing. Now, my goals are bigger, higher, and no longer just dreams or fantasies. "You know, it seems like forever when you are in col lege and you think about your future. Now it is all begin ning to happen." Her travels have given Susan some ideas about where she would like to settle down. "Eventually, I'd like to move from Oklahoma to the East Coast. Hopefully, after the first of the year, I might live in New York City. And if things work out, I might even get to work at Lin coln Center," she said,.referring to the home of both the Metropolitan Opera and the New York City Opera.
