Webs ink new contracts New York--Veteran broadcaster Al Albert has signed with USA Network as a play-by-play commentator on the upcoming Thursday Night NBA series. This year, the series will comprise 40-45 regular season games plus playoff and pre-season contests. Albert will work USA cablecasts originating from the eastern section of the country. He also will participate in USA's third annual coverage of the NBA Draft scheduled for June 1982. Albert's broadcast partner on the games will be former NBA "Coach of the Year" Hubie Brown, who recently was hired by USA Network as a color commentator. Other Thursday Night NBA announcers include Eddie Doucette and Steve Jones, play-by-play and color, respectively, on west coast games, and Jon McGlocklin and Keith Erickson, each of whom will handle color chores on selected games throughout the season. * * * ABC Sports and the National Collegiate Athletic Association have reached an agreement for a new four-year contract for television coverage of college football during the 1982 through 1985 seasons. This fall, ABC Sports enters its 16th consecutive season of exclusive coverage of the NCAA Football series, and starting with the 1982 season, under a new arrangement initiated by the NCAA, a similar package has been negotiated with CBS Sports. Each market will receive 14 regular season games on either a national or regional basis. • • • Jack Whitaker, now in his 21st year with CBS Sports, has agreed to a multi-year contract to continue his association with CBS-TV. Whitaker, an Emmy Award winner who has covered a wide variety of sports during his years with CBS--and who now con­ centrates on professional golf and Thoroughbred racing--will continue to do prestige events, including many for "CBS Sports Saturday/Sunday," and will also present his timely commen- PAM27 taries. During the 1981 football season, he will again host "The Legends of the Game," a special feature presented during half time of "The NFL Today" on doubleheader Sundays. * * * Bill Russell, who has been named the "Greatest Player in the History of the National Basketball Association," has also agreed to a new contract with CBS Sports. Russell will return for his third year as an expert analyst on broadcasts of NBA games for the 1981-82 season, As a center for the Boston Celtics, Russell led his team to 11 NBA World Championships, the last two of which he was a player-coach. During his 13-year career, Russell was selected as tye league's Most Valuable Player five different times. Russell, who had more than 31,000 rebounds in his profes­ sional career (second only to Wilt Chamberlain), joined Boston in December of the 1956-57 season, after leading the United States to a basketball gold medal at the Melbourne Olympics, with an 89-55 victory over the Soviet Union in the finals. After a three-year absence from professional basketball (he was an NBA analyst for ABC-TV), Russell returned to coach the Seattle SuperSonics for four seasons (1974-77).
