"What are we going to do with all of these girls?" they ask. When practice officially started, 40-45 hopefuls showed up on the court. Since school began, however, about 20 more have decided to join. "I really don't know what to do with all of them", said Shaffer who is beginning her sixth year of coaching of McHenry. "Our varsity roster will be trimmed down to 12 or 13 players." One distinct advantage in making one of the teams would be height. "I never had any tall girls," said Shaffer. "Our girls have to really hustle and learn to play good defense. "It would be nice to have some size." One thing that the Warrior girls won't be lacking in this season is experience, however. Five returning lettermen including all-conference performers Pam West and Donna Chester will be seeking their first .500 season ever. McHenry's record of 11-12 last year was the girls all-time best. Two other girls, Chris lacullo and Joan Stelmach, will also be returning for their senior years. Joyce Jaskowiak is the lone returning junior member. Other girls that will fill the roster are senior Kim Hughes; juniors Deb Koerber, Julie Netterman, Dawn Sturm, Wendy Thurwell, and Jodi Werhane; and sophomore Andee Norton. "We've developed a highly skilled team," said Shaf fer. "We're a more experienced team, and because we lack height, that gives us more determination to play well. "Another reason that we should do well is that the top teams from a year ago lost the majority of their players through graduation," she continued. "Last year's champion, Crown for example, lost all six of its starters." McHenry lost only two starters from last year in Deb Bauer and Krista Kaefer who were also four-year players.
