Record- To Reach Despite coming off o 5-9 record last year, coach Mike Shanahan has good reason to believe that his girl swimmers will climb over the .500 plateau for the first time ever. "Last year was the most wins the girls have ever had although we were close in a couple of the loses," said Shanahan. "We were a very young and inex perienced team with only four seniors." This year, of the seven returning letterwinners, only one is a senior with the nucleus of the team to be based on two juniors and two sophomore. Still young and already experienced, Shanahan feels that this team has the potential to break eight of the school's 11 swimming records. Junior Terri Blume Steads the list with two individual records and one team record. Her marks of 27.0 in the 50 yard freestyle and 1:13.0 in the 100 yard backstroke are the fastest ever. She is also a member of the record setting 200 yard medley relay team. PAGE 8 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11.1*1 Another junior, Heidi Dass, returns to defend her school record of 6:40.7 in the 500 yard freestyle. She is also one of three girls to return in the quickest-ever 400 yard freestyle relay team. Joining Dass on that relay will be sophomores Robin Loss and Danielle Johnson. Loss also returns to ac company Blume in the 200 yard medley relay. The other returning letterwinners are senior Paula Harney, junior Lisa Thorne, and sophomore Patti Freund. Three seniors that Shanahan feels should letter this year are Diana Gregg, Bev Finkbiener, and Sharon Foley. Also expected to make significant contributions are Kim Biggerstaff, Chris Conway, Gina Jernberg, Kathy Kloss, and Kelly Watkins. Shanahan has yet to see what his freshmen crop will bring as they have started later than the rest of the team. Stickers Dominated By Senior Members John Sytsma didn't have the faintest idea that he */ouid be McHenry's new field hockey coach this year. Bui when Cis Morner last year s coach became hospitalized, it was apparent thai a replacement would have to be sought. Svisma inherits a team of numerous returning let erwinners dominated by eight seniors among his present 14 players. There are also five juniors ana one vreshman, Tricia Flage, on the squad. There are no sophomores. One senior in particular, Sue Bielsky, has impressed Sytsma with her play at the forward position and will be looked upon as one of the team s leaders This will also be ner fourth year on the team. Only two other seniors, defenseman Eileen Smith and Sue Smith will be playing in their fourth straight seasons also Other senior Warriors this year include forwards Cindy Byron, Pam Reinholm. and Tammy Sproull, and defensemen Cara Jepsen and Tammy Sek. Defensive roles have been given to the junior mem bers thus far. Kelly Brough, Lynn Podpora, Lee Tomlinson, and Belinda Wolf have bee practicing as defensemen, and Karen Karpavicious has been designated as goalie. In McHenry's sub .500 season last year, many of the losses were low-scoring, one-point games. Therefore, this season Sytsma will be emphasizing of fense. He feels that the Warriors will be competitive this year because of all the returning upperclassmen. He is also waiting for a few more players to join the squad and hopefully they will be younger players. "I'd like to see more freshmen girls come out for the team," said Sytsma. "The more younger players we get out, the better our program is going to be in the future." 60 FOR THE GUSTO.. GO FOR THE GOLD! BELL LIQUORS Merchants of Fine Wine & Liquors 4610 W.
