SiS9 Receivers Key Skyhawks Success Shark Conference For many of the players on the Johnsburg football team, the 1981 season will be the one to in a sense, "Win one for the Gipper." The Gipp in this case is Skyhawk head coach Bob Schmitt who will lead his first graduating class onto the field this fall. He is the only coach a dozen or so of the players have ever known. In the four-year history of Johnsburg high school, Schmitt served as freshman, then sophomore, and now for the second straight year will be at the helm of the varsity squad. As his players have progressed, so has he. "It's kind of a father-son type of relationship," said Schmitt. "It's a novel experience coaching the same guys for four years and to prepare them for varsity competition. That's why I want to really do good for them this year." But for Johnsburg to do well, Schmitt and his assistant Don March will be the first to tell you that the key to success will be to avoid injuries. "We're not as big as other schools like Hononegah who number around 1100," indicated Schmitt. Therefore, for us to win we have to stay healthy. We lust don't have as much to work with as they do." Enrollment at Johnsburg this year is approximately 660. With only 26 players reporting for the varsity squad, Schmitt has paid special attention to his linemen. "Right now I only have eight linemen," he said. "I only have two linemen off the sophomore squad from lost year so they are our biggest concern." The Skyhawks have only two players that tip the scales at over 200 pounds, returning senior tockie Wayne Brennen and junior tackle Joe Hendrix. Senior letterman Mike Dalan is the third tackle. The remainder of the line will be anchored by senior center Paul Klein and guards Paul Smith and Larry Hoagy Dix. Smith was a starter from last year and he also filled in as linebacker on defense. As a junior, Dix was a starter at defensive end and this year he may play both ways. Reserve linemen include seniors Jeff Clary, Gary Wegner, and Jim Wags. The running back positions have already been depleted as two seniors are out indefinitely with strep throat. Starting fullback Pete Barroso, another of the 12 returning lettermen, will also be sorely missed on defense as he led Johnsburg in tackles last season from his linebacker position. Halfback Pat Rorig shares the same catastrophy and his status is also questionable. Their absence has opened the door for senior Rob Wormley and junior John Miedzianowski who will seek starting berths. One player that seems definite to play is senior quar PAGE It • PLAINDEALER • FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11,1M1 READY TO GO • for the Skyhawks in their fourth and final Smith, Mike Dalan, and Wayne Brennen. Serving as backup will be 5*8" lefthander Dan Hov- seth. "He has good potential and could also become a running back or a wide receiver," said Schmitt. The strength of his football team lies in the quality and depth of his ends, according to Schmitt. Starters will be senior returning lettermen Rob Schmidt and Scott Zalke, while fellow seniors Ken Allen and Tom Kost will see action along with juniors M.J. Anderson, Tom Huemann, and Mike Hurckes. Besides his receiving chores, Schmidt will again be depended upon to handle the kicking duties. First year player Tom Peiper is expected to give Schmidt his biggest challenge. Schmitt has only eight juniors on the squad and no sophomores. "We want the sophomores to fill a good team and build for the future," said Schmitt. "Although we're small in numbers, we're also coun ting on our summer workouts to give us a big boost," he added. Fifteen to twenty of our players were ac tively involved in a weight program at least twice a week and the summer passing league really helped our offense. Dan threw in all of the games this sum mer." Last year, Johnsburg hod a 3-6 overall record and V _ ^ Jimmy Meyers t Athletic Director Hononegah, Harvard, and Marengo finished the season in a three-way tie for first place with identical 6-1 records. "If we minimize our injuries, we could reach our goal of five wins," Schmitt continued. "Our guys have made a lot of sacrifices."
