In his first year as Marian's girl tennis coach, Tom Burg has had more than his share of difficulties. The biggest problem has been the weather," he said. "We've only been able to get outside for three practices before school started because of the rain." And when the courts have been playable, Burg has found it difficult to evaluate his team. He explains, On the first day of practice, 25 girls came out for the varsity and another 15-20 girls came out for the junior varsity. With four courts being used simultaneously, its difficult for only one person to look them all over." Burg realizes, however, that if all of the returning letterwinners do indeed return, the outlook for 198T is very promising as only Karen Truckenbrod has graduated. Senior Ellen Miller of McHenry will be the leader of the Hurricanes this year. Ranked at the number two singles position last year behind Truckenbrod, Miller now is the number one player and according to Burg SKYHAWKS, HURRICANES, WARRIORS YOU'RE ALL WINNERS IN OUR HEARTS. 1226 N.GREEN McHENRY Wishing You ALL... It is also hopeful that both returning state doubles teams will also be back. Heidi Reihansperger (McHenry) and JoAnne Hanrahan were the number one team and Sue Bolger (McHenry) and Terri Koch made up the second squad. All four girls will be seniors, but it is still questionable whether Koch and Hanrahan will play due to conflicting work schedules. If that is the case, Marian's last senior, Donna Liston, will pick up the slack. She had been expected to compete i.n singles. The number two singles player is expected to be Gina Gilpin, also from McHenry. Other juniors that will play key roles are Cathy Doherty (McHenry), and Mary Newkirk. For the first few meets, Burg will be going with the doubles teams of Bolger-Reihansberger and Liston- Newkirk until his team is settled. "Our goal will be to get last year's teams back together," he said. Burg also indicated that three other seniors, Maura GOOD LUCK FUR A GREAT SEASUN! Marian finished 14-9 last year and Burg feels that his girls should also fare very well this season regar dless of the fact that the Hurricanes are now a part of the Shark conference. "We'll do well no matter what conference we play in," he stated. "We'll play many non-conference schools that are a lot bigger than us including two high schools from Rockford, besides Cary, Woodstock, and Grant. "We won't play our first conference match until Sep tember 17 when we travel to Hononegha. By that time we'll already have seven matches in.
