11.1M1 FRIDAY fmm PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE - Is what it's going to take for the Marian Cenral volleyball team to match last year's 25-S-l overall record. With six senior* lost through graduation, head coach Mary Stoner has an almost new team to work with, and work is what her players do. As one group of players goes through calesthenics (background), another grooup of Hurricane players works cs a spiking drill at the net (foreground). STAFF PHOTO - WAYNE GAYLORD Rebuilding Year Apparent For Hurricane Spikers It won't be as easy as it was last year. Mary Stoner, Marian Centrals' head volleyball coach, has two main concerns as she approaches the start of her fourth season. First, she'll have to start from scratch with a prac tically new team. As her six star players from the 25- S-l Jeam have graduated, Stoner has to fill those spots witn new personnel and mold the players to fit her style. Second, Stoner won't have the height advantage that she enjoyed last year which carried the Hurricanes past district and sectionals and into the supersectionals. Two of the departed seniors are Sandy Kasting and Kendall Ryan, a pair of 5'10" spikers from Crystal Lake. "I had a good solid team last year,' reminisced Stoner. "Although I have an almost entirely new team to work with this year, I'm very optimistic." This year, she will again have six seniors on the squad led by 5'4" Jackie Weber. Weber is the lone returning starter and will begin her fourth straight year on the varsity squad. The other senior letterwinners are Jean Thompson and Julie Nylander, both at 5'5" and both from McHenry; Maggie Monson 5'2" from Crystal Lake; and Debbie Liggett, the tallest at 57" from Wonder Lake. Crystal Lake native Holly Ryar. is the only returning junior. At 57", she and Liggett are the tallest of the returning lettermen. Both players saw considerable action last year in reserve roles. After playing 14 years in the West Suburban con ference, Marian will be part of the Shark conference this season and Stoner admits that this will have a slight psychological effect on her players. "We've played schools like Johnsburg, Marengo, and Harvard in non-conference games in previous years, so they won't be strangers to us," said Stoner. "But since we're bunched in the same conference this year, those games will obviously be more important to us and we should play with more intensity." "It's really hard to predict where we will finish this year," she added. "The girls look really good, and I'm excited about the upcoming season. Our goal is to shoot for a .500 season." Stoner will also have an assistant for the first time in her four years of coaching the Hurricanes. Virginia Pharr, chairperson of Marian's American Studies program, will assist Stoner on the court this season. Other members of the squad that Stoner will be counting on to add height to the front line are Jennifer Johnson, a 5'8" senior from Richmond, and Sarah Traver, a 57" junior from Spring Grove. 's Corner • ' ' Mary Stoner, a 28-year- old Woodstock native, if starting her fourth season as head coach of Marian Central's volleyball team. She received her B.A. degree in physical education from Mon mouth College where she played no organized sports but was a cheerleader and gym nastics enthusiast. Following graduation, Stoner began coaching at Boylan Catholic heading the volleyball and track teams there. She later moved to Florida and coached volleyball at Miami Shores junior high. She is a certified USVBA Level I coach and totals seven years coaching expereince. Stoner, 28, led the Hurricanes to a sixth place finish at state in 1978, and in each of the last two years she has advanced her team into the supersectionals.
