The number two tandem of Sue Bolger and Gina Gilpin won by the same margin over Mindy Spear and Channing Wilson. The Marian freshmen squad also won 3-2 and also evened its record at 1-1 for the season. The three winners were Michele Gignon in number one singles, and the doubles teams of Clair Gignon- Serena Michle, and Vickie Fabbri-Nancy Smith. After matches with Grant and DeKalb on Wednesday and Thursday this week, the Hurricanes will travel to Guilford on Saturday, Sept. 12, and then to Jacobs on Monday, Sept. 14. This will be the concluding Divot Dolls report for the season. By and large, for the ladies at McHenry Country club is has been a good golfing season. In spite of the unprecedented amount of rainfall there were few raine dout or cancelled Tuesday events. And a games com mittee headed by Virginia Turner and Nell Fidler produced an interesting and varied schedule. Some new gals joined the ranks of the avid Tuesday Dolls while others were no longer with us. The pall of sadness which descended upon her friends at the loss of Mil Leisten was eased by the remembrance of her indomitable spirit and leadership. The Travelling team, while not taking all the frosting on the cake, per formed commendably and had a good win-loss season. The highlight of the ladies' activities - the McHenry Women's Invitational - exceeded itself in its hospitality, golfing and contestant draw - a very successful affair. Our blonde bomber, Carol Cooney, remains the ladies' Club Champion although the competition was closer and more exciting this year with some of the gals giving Carol a hard run. As part of winding down the season, a group of the ladies travelled to Wood stock for an exchange day this past Tuesday and although there are no more serious scheduled events, as long as Mother Nature continues to provide nice Tuesdays a number of the gals will continue to play on their special day. The touches of the sublime and the ridiculous, reported from time to time, were all part of the game that brought the gals back each week and, the Good Lord willing and the creek don't rise - too high - they'll all be back next spring for more. SEPTEMBER 11,1M1 d Nevter having gained any notoriety in football except as a Monday Morning Quarterback, I still have some ideas about the Chicago Bears and their loss to the Green Bay Packers. yji With time outs to spare in the all-important last two minutes of the game, the Bears and their coaches seemed to forget their lessons. The Bears took a 1&-9 loss when there was a real chance to tie the game in those two minutes. If I were anything but a great admirer of the Packer coach, Bart Starr, the Bear loss would be painful. Met Paul and Key Brefeld last week and the subject of Mary Nolen's asafetida bag tied around the neck was discussed. Paul says the custom didn't belong to Southern Illinois alone. Nope. The Germans in this area used the obnoxious stuff to repel disease. He says when it got wet or warm, no germ, human or animal would come near you. Suppose every nationality had favorite customs. The Irish had a different way. They tied a wool sock around the neck. (Nobody believed me when I told it had to be dirty sock.) Suppose the results were the same We saw this bumper sticker: Warning -- this car stops for all rummage sales. The mailman brought a 1981 football handbook, covering both college and pro teams, from Chuck Pet?fson It's nice to be remembered I Hear with something like that, especially when most of our mail is asking for donations. "Schmaltz" Miller's many friends (he has more friends than Heinz has pickles) will be glad to know that he is home after a hospital stay. He is still a member of the "Cane Club". Sept. 1,1961 Dear Earl: Leaning on your past in dulgence and patience - I'm wondering if you have had any inkling - or information if the Voyager II will meet up with the Golden Gates?? Humble wondering, K. Brown Dear K: You must know S.I.H. has a very active grapevine. Word is the gates are open, but the Voyager hasn't reached that height. Whenever you are won dering, just write to us. If we don't have the answer, we will tell you something just as good. Yours, S.I.H. These are trying days -- days when our chief tor mentors ask, "What's the matter with the White Sox?" Of course, they are referring to the Sagging Sox. Lately, it would have been better for the Sox to have been rained out than snowed under Guess there is nothing wrong that a few good base hits won't cure. Warrior Spikers Fall ACROSS FROM ALTHOFF'S McHenry volleyball coach Pam Shaffer couldn't believe what had happened to her team Tuesday night. After unmerciffully winning the first game against Wauconda 15-1, the Warriors fell apart and dropped the next two games scores of 15-12 and 15-6 ving them an 0-1 start. "In the first game we looked like a pro team," said Shaffer. "We couldn't do anything wrong. But in the next two games were were anything but professionals." McHenry had two consecutive ace serves that put them up 12-11 in the second game, but from then on all of their serves had failed. Wauconda then scored four straight points to win the game, tie the match, SAVE $1M COUPON and take over the momentum. "There was no stopping them after that," said Shaffer. The third game went from bad to worse as McHenry again found disaster with failing in its serves. Pam West was one bright spot for the Warriors as she made 18 of 20 serves, including seven consecutive points in the first game. Chris Iaculla also had a good night for McHenry as she made 8 out of 10 serves and had 15 out of 16 well directed spiked. The Warriors freshmen also lost to Wauconda 11-8, and the sophomore followed suit losing in straight matches 15-9, 15-6.
