PLEASANT SURPRISE I was pleasantly surprised when I received a letter sent to me in care of the Plain- dealer office from a former long time resident of Wonder Lake, Mary Lou Hartog. She and her husband Leo now live in Horseshoe Bend, Ark., but receive the paper every week and enjoy the Wonder Lake column. Mary Lou added some "old timers" information that I want to share with you. When they moved to Wonder Lake, there were about 25 year-around residents on the east side of the lake. She said these people looked forward to fall when all the "summer people" went back to Chicago and things got back to normal again! The gathering place at that time was Jerry's Place, run by Jerry and Mae Kubovy. It was a tavern and restaurant on the lake, later becoming known as LaGreca's Lakeview Inn. Mary Lou and Helen Reuter were the originators of the "Grapevine" which later was taken over by Fred Zandier and his dad and then re-named the "Party Line". I remember the florist shop Mary Lou started out of her garage in Wonder Center. She had beautiful plants and made up very pretty corsages. At one time before that, she had a novelty shop and I have pleasant memories of get ting a Howdy Doody marionette there which was one of my prize possessions. For those of you who have been reading the Plaindealer for a long time, you will remember that Mary Lou was the Wonder Lake correspondent. For the past three years now, she has been the editor of the Hor seshoe Bend newspaper, running the office all by herself. It's always nice to hear form former Wonder Lakers especially those like Mary Lou and Leo who were part of Wonder Lake history. SPECIAL DAYS Happy birthday to Anita Beaman who will be celebrating her birthday Sept. 26. Anita is looking forward to getting some new roller skates for her bir thday, so look out all you roller derby queens! HAPPY BIRTHDAY ...to Stephanie Freund, who will be five Sept. 28. Stephanie is one sweet little girl, who likes her cake and ice cream. Have a very happy day with your family and friends. ANNIVERSARY Pam and Ken Brehm celebrated their thirteenth anniversary Monday, Sept. 14. Congratulations to you both, may you continue many more happy years together. SAUFEN-UND-SPIEL ...was a huge success, starting with a super parade. Many people worked many hours for both picnic and parade. Since I was marching, I was unable to view the parade from the side. The Cub Scouts of Pack 454 had 43 boys marching. Boy Scout Troop 455, from Johnsburg, marched also. The parade was the largest I remember in Johnsburg for this event. One hundred entries of various kinds, pulling floats and marching units. And, what parade would be complete without music. This was provided by the Johnsburg Schools Marching band. The picnic was very nice, and many familiar faces were around the grounds. The biggest event for the children was Gold Fish game, which had long lines for many hours. Many happy children went home with a gold fish as their prize for the day. MOTHERS'S MARCH Volunteers for the March of Dimes will be visiting the Johnsburg and other areas the coming week of Sept. 21 to 27. Be expecting them!
