Last Saturday, the Skyhawks dropped their second game o f 'Hp season in many outings *o 'he iiayslake Hams H-o. Johnsburg managed only six first downs while giving up six turnovers to the Rams. Williams completed six passes in 12 attempts for 32 yards. But the two in terceptions he threw were critical blows to the Skyhawk squad "You can't expect to throw well if you're running away from the defense," said Williams. And that's just what the senior signal caller was doing Saturday. Although he managed to scramble four times for 27 yards, his day might have been better Several of Williams passes, as in the first game of the season, were dropped by his receivers Grayslake scored after receiving the opening kickoff. It took the Rams just three plays to cover 75 yards and score on a 19-yard run by James Solka. After con verting the two-point extra point, the Rams had all that they would need. John Miedzianowski lead the way for Johnsburg on both offense and defense. He rushed seven times for 43 yards, had ' seven solo tackles, four assists, and two quarterback sacks. The Skyhawks gained 97 yards rushing in the contest, most of which came on end sweeps and quarterback bootleg runs. Johnsburg's best scoring opportunity came in the third quarter when Mied zianowski blocked a Grayslake punt to have Paul Smith recover the ball on the Hams 25 yard line. Two incomplete passses, followed by a loss on a running play, however, forced the Skyhawks to punt the ball away. Johnsburg moved the ball well late in the fourth quarter Williams scram bled for 11 yards and a first down on their own 37-yard line. Williams then com pleted a 13-yard pass to junior Tom Huemann for another Skyhawk first down, and then he found him again for an eight-yard gain. But on the next play, the drive ended when Williams scrambled out of the pocket to avoid the pass rush, and was intercepted for the second time of the game. Johnsburg's main problem at this point seems to be that too many players are playing both offense and defense. "We can really compete in the early parts of the game," said Williams, "But we really get tired in the lines from playing both ways for the whole game." Johnsburg will hope to alleviate this problem when two more linemen become eligible. Bill Stefka is ex pected to help the defense and Jim Wajs is expected to be as fine as an offensive lineman as he was in the past. Johnsburg will travel to Harvard on Friday, Sept. 25, hoping to win its first con ference game. "I think that if we beat Harvard then we could really pull the season together," added Williams. The sophomore Skyhawks ran their record to 2-0 with a 8-0 -wnrover the Rams: Jim Hopp scored the only touchdown of the game on an 85-yard run. Brian Siudak scored the two-point extra point on a pass reception to conclude the scoring and keep Johnsburg's record unblemished. The sophomore team will play at Harvard on Friday, Sept. 25. With four juniors and <jne sophomore, the young Warriors put together a fine team effort while fighting the windy conditions. McHenry junior Kirk Barnicle fired a 75 which tied him for first place, but he lost in a playoff to Scott McWerthy of Hoffman Estates. Other Warrior scores were Brad Adams, fifth with a 78; Steve Svec, 79; Tom Neumann, 81; and Mike Bauml, 83. After a Tuesday triangular with Prospect and Elgin, McHenry will host defending state champion Crystal Lake South on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 3:30 p.m. Joe Schlender's McHenry Warriors won a thriller Friday night as they defeated Grant 16-14. Even a pass interception by the Warriors' Mike Connor on tKe last play of the game didn't end it as a penalty gave the Bulldogs one last play. The final play was a completed pass, but the receiver was tacked well short of the goal line giving the McHenry squad its second victory in as many weeks. After the Warriors kicked off, neither team moved the ball as they exchanged punts. With fourth down and long yardage on its own 16- yard line, the snap from center went over the Grant punter's head into the end zone. When the punter tried to run the ball out, Connor was there to tackle him for a safety giving McHenry a 2- 0 lead at 5:46 in the first period. After the kickoff, Grant dug in and held the Warriors on the Grant 38-yard line. On the first play, Grant quar terback Tom Uyttebroock then lofted a pass to Dan Sunde for a 68-yard touch down. The extra point kick was good and Grant led 7-2 with 3:38 remaining in the quarter. The second period was a standstill until the Bulldogs punted into the Warrior end zone. Taking the ball on its own 20-yard line with less than threes minutes remaining, the Warriors began an 80-yard drive that would lead to the go-ahead touchdown. Doug Mullen's pass to Tom Lynk was good for 20 yards to the 40. Two carries later, Mullen had the ball down to the Grant 33-yard line. With less than one minute remaining, Tom Wagner raced 13 yards to the 20. nine. Then Mullen found Dennis Shaver all alone in the end zone for a touchdown with just 0:05 remaining in the half. Mullen's kick was good and McHeiu-y led 9-7. During the third period, neither team could muster much of an offense as both teams punted twice. With seconds remaining in the period, Lynk fell on a Grant fumble on the 17-yard line. Three plays later, Mullen found Denny DeJa wide open and hit him for a touchdown. Mullen again converted the extra point, and McHenry's lead was extended to 16-7 with 11:53 remaining in the game. After a short kickoff, the Grant team was penalized back to its own 25-yard line. A completed pass gave them a first down at midfield, then a lateral went astray and the Warriors recovered on the Grant 43-yard line. Grant got the ball back on an interception, but then lost it again on a punt. McHenry marched to the Grant 25- yard line where it gave up the ball on downs. After a 24- yard completion, Uyt tebroock found Sunde with a 55-yard touchdown pass making the score 16-14 with 1:44 remaining. Grant got one last possession with seconds remaining, but came up short as was mentioned earlier. The Warrior defense, led by John Clewis, Doug Mit- sven, Dan Clark, the Reh- berg brothers, Lynk, DeJa, Scott Schmitt, Connor, and Kelly Gartner, were all over the field as they held Grant to only 17 yards rushing. McHenry's defense also picked up some from last week. Doug MtiRlfcn is becoming a fine passer, and Tom Wagner has established himself as a fine bafck. Lynk and Shaver haveflroven t h e m s e l v e s q t i a l i t y receivers. McHenry will begin conference play on Friday, Sept. 25, when they'travel to Crystal Lake South for a 8:00 p.m. night game.
