Out; It's Wayne's Fox Hole Tap For Title PAGE 7 -PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. SEPTEMBER tS. lftl Wayne's put together one of the remarkable displays of team offense as they came from nine runs back to knock Doherty's out of the 13-inch playoffs by a score of ̂ie-12. The winners were trailing 1S-3 going into the bottom of the fourth inning and while most fans were already talking about a third game, the Wayne's "Wrecking Crew" began to go to work. Everyone in the lineup had at leiut one hit during the nine-run explosion except for Don Prazak who had a sacrifice fly and drove in a run. •When the smoke cleared /Wayne's had knotted the - score at 12. Doherty's faded - out of the picture as only two tanners reached base during the last three innings, both on walks, while the winners scored four times in their last two at ^ats. Doherty's started the scoring spree in the first inning when they sent 11 men to the plate and took a seven- run lead. Mike Rogers, Jeff Med- dings and Irish DeCiccio ripped three straight singles for the first run. Jerry Brodin walked filling the bases and John DeCiccio delivered a two-run single. Tom DeCiccio doubled in a fourth run while Randy Vauk drove in two more runs with a base hit. Jim Wayman singled in number seven and Doherty's looked invincible. Wayne Roewer belted a three-run homer for Wayne's in their half of the first to keep the score close. Roewer, who was easily the most valuable player in the winner's lineup, would drive in four more runs, hit another home run, and go three few three with seven RBIs for the evening! After neither club scored in the second, Doherty's put across five more runs in the third and took what looked like an insurmountable lead. Randy Vauk led off with a double, went to third on a groundout, and scored on Jim Wayman's infield single. Mike Rogers and Jeff Meddings followed a base on balls to Tom Roach with RBI singles. A throwing error plus Irish DeCicco's sacrifice fly put Doherty's up 12-3. Wayne's went three up, three down in the third (their second inning in a row for this) and it did look like a third game in the series would be needed. But the "Wrecking Crew" went to work in the fourth inning. Tom Prudden, who ended the contest going .three for three, with four runs socred, led off with an infield single. Tom Burke doubled and Wayne Roewer hit a long fly to left scoring Prudden. Next up Kevin Horner slammed a two-run home run to cut Doherty's lead to 12-6. Pat Burke, Rick Wiegman and Bob Buss teamed for another run with three straight singles. Another single by pinch hitter Terry Hovseth made the score 12-7. Don Prazak sacrified in a run followed by Rich Ku- chura's single, an RBI double by Tom Prudden plus a walk to Tom Burke. That brought up Wayne Roewer who cracked a bases loaded single to tie the score. In the fifth Bob Buss, who has not - played much all season, became the hero with a clutch double to score Pat Burke with the go-ahead run. Buss had 2 hits and two RBIs in the game and played a very good defensive game at third base The next inning saw Wayne's add three insurance runs to their vitory margin. Tom Prudden tripled in Rich Kuchura who had led off with a single. Prudden scored on Tom Burke's sacrififce fly and then Wayne Roewer powered a long solo home run for the final tally of the evening. Doherty's who had 13 hits in the contest went hitless in five of the seven innings. Mike Rogers, the leading hitter all season for the Western Division leaders, had two hits as did Jeff Meddings, Randy Vauk and Jim Wayman. Doherty's Wayne's 7 0 5 0 0 0 0-12 3 0 0 9 13 X-1C In a Softball season which has resembled the N.F.L. Wayne's begins to look more and more like the team to beat in the 1981 Cham pionship series with a roster virtually intact. Key in juries, players quitting and out of town business trips have decimated every team. In an unofficial count ot just the playoff contending ball clubs, on and off the field injuries have sidelined or weakened nearly two dozen athletes through the season. The playoffs have become not only who has the best team but who has the healthiest ball club. Wayne's and Fox Hole Tap will conclude their best of five Championship series this Wednesday evening, September 23, with the first game (game 3 of the series) set to begin at 6:45 p.m. A second and third game will be played only if necessary. Two Crown interceptions made the difference on Saturday as the Vikings defeated Marian Central Catholic high school 14-3. Crown safety Lynn Grant pulled off the first of his two heists in the second quarter, snatching a Chuck Hartleib pass at the Hurricane 41- yard line and racing to the six. The Viking's Bob Grant then took the ball in for a touchdown, and a successful extra point gave Crown a 7-0 lead. Marian got on the scoreboard late in the second quarter when Scott Spengel booted a 28-yard field goal. With a touchdown reception last week against St. Ed ward and the extra point conversion, Spengel has scored all 10 points for the Hurricanes thus far this The Vikings iced the game later in the third period when Grant intercepted a Don Rickert pass and ran 25 yards for the final touch down. The conversion at tempt was again good and Crown concluded its scoring. The Hurricanes will try to get back on the winning track on Friday, Sept. 25 when they travel to Hononnegah for a 8:00 p.m. Shark conference game.
