Walz Zabriskie and Lundquist--ABC's NCAA duo Steve Zabriskie, who formerly served as a play-by-play announcer on "NCAA Football" on a free-lance basis, returns to the broadcast booth this fall for his second year as a full time ABC Sports announcer. Zabriskie, a native of Palo Alto, Califor­ nia attended the University of Houston on a football scholarship and launched his sports announcing career in Seattle, Washington where he was affiliated with radio station KGDN. Steve Zabriskie After a brief stint in Houston, Steve moved to Austin, Texas where he joined KHFI-TV (NBC affiliate) as sports direc­ tor and after three years there he switch­ ed to Austin's KVUE-TV (ABC affiliate) where he worked in the same capacity for one year. Zabriskie then took over as sports director for KTUL-TV (ABC affiliate) in Tulsa and among his varied assign­ ments, Steve produced and hosted the University of Oklahoma football show with coaches Chuck Fairbanks and then Barry Switzer. Steve spent a year (1974) as a free­ lance producer and play-by-play an­ nouncer working out of Los Angeles and then he joined WTAE-TV (ABC affiliate) in Pittsburgh where he worked for three years as sports director. He left WTAE in December of 1978, and free lanced until the spring of 1980, when he signed a contract as a full time sports announcer for ABC. Zabriskie, 34, his wife Lynne and daughter Stephanie, currently reside on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Verne's story Verne Lundquist is the sports director for ABC's Dallas affiliate WFAA. He's been a play-by-play announcer on the "NCAA Football" series since 1974. He also has been called on by ABC Sports to handle a variety of golf assignments and in the spring of* 1979, the network signed him to cover the sidelines on ABC's North American Soc­ cer League telecasts. Verne previously handled radio and television play-by­ play for the NASL's Dallas Tornado. On occasion Verne also covered ABC's "In­ ternational Boxing" series. Since 1972, Lundquist has been the play-by-play announcer on the Dallas Cowboys' radio network which includes 214 stations reaching 14 states. He was voted Texas "Sportscaster of the Year" for the past four straight years His career in communications began Verne Lundquist during his college days when he worked weekends as radio announcer at KWED in Seguin, Texas and summers as an­ nouncer at KROS in Clinton, Iowa. He 'was radio and television announcer with WOC in Davenport, Iowa. And the field of sportscasting claimed him for its own when he was named sports director at KTBC Radio and TV in Austin, Texas. An Austin, Texas native, Lundquist at­ tended Stephen F. Austin High School. He was graduated from Texas Lutheran College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology in 1962.
