Warriors Win Again 13-8 LEADING THE PACK - In last Thursday's triangular cross country meet are Ave McHenry runners. STAFF PHOTOS - CARL MOESCHE McHenry Harriers Unbeaten WADE CEPULIS Granted Joe Schtender's football Warriors are a hot item these djays with a 3-0 start, but there's another unbeaten team-at McHenry high school that keeps on rolling also. Bill Hutchinson's cross country team easily handled Crystal Lake South and Mundelein in a triangular meet at West campus Thursday night to improve its record to 9-0 in dual meets. So dominant were the Warriors that they finished in the top five spots to score a perfect 15 against both schools. McHenry defeated South 15-45 and Mundelein 15-48. To complete the scoring, Mundelein topped South 20-35. McHenry senior Wade Cepulis led the pack in the three mile course with a time of 15 minutes and 59 seconds. Steve Carby finished second in 16:10, and was followed by Gordy Bourey, third in 16:17; Brian Wright, fourth in 16:51; and Jeff Wallace, fifth in 17:23. Other finishers for the Warriors included Roland Ostrander, eighth in 17:41; Jim Wynveen, twelfth in 18:08; A1 Kopp, twenty- second in 19:41; and Jim Gibson, twenty-ninth in 22:43. The Warrior boys freshmen-sophomore team won their race by placing the top four harriers to top South 16-45 and also Mundelein 15-44. Freshman Chris Creutz led the Warriors with his first place time of 10:44. Marty Koleno was second in 11:14 and was followed by Brian Ahlgrim, third in 11:48; and Erich Gaza, fourth in 12:19. Tom Wyn­ veen was the fifth finisher for McHenry as his 12:28 clocking placed him sixth. Other runers for the Warriors were Jeff Pankiewicz, ninth in 12:48; Don Brizzi, fourtenth in 13:16; and Mike Widhalm, twenty-second in 14:34. The McHenry girls numbered nine contestants, the most they've had this season, and tied South at 28 all while defeating Mun­ delein 20-39. Sophomore Delia Saun­ ders paced the Warrior girls team with a first place finish in 12:58. Pam Bradley came in third for McHenry in 13:38 and Mary Bazan finished fourth in 13:43. The other two girls that figured in the scoring for McHenry were Tiffany Hinger, eleventh in 15:06; and Sue Pender, fourteenth in 15:15. Hutchinson's harriers will be off until Thursday, Oct. 1 DELLA SAUNDERS when they travel to Crystal Lake Central for a triangular meet with the Tigers and also Jacobs. "The course in Crystal Lake is very hilly," said Hutchinson. "But we're going to practice there this week to prepare for the meet. We'll be ready." Carl Moesche Harvard Tops Johnsburg Friday night the Harvard Hornets turned back Johnsburg 19-0 leaving the Skyhawks with a 0-3 overall record and 0-1 in the Shark conference. Johnsburg will be looking for its first win of the season Saturday when Bob Sch- mitt's team travels to Beloit Catholic for a non- conference tilt. Mike Shepherd scored one touchdown and Tim Linhart added two more to pace the Hornets. Shepard opened the scoring in the first quarter on a three-yard run and buuted the extra point to give Harvard a 7-0 lead. Linhart scored scored on a one-yard run in the second quarter and a two-yard run in the third quarter to conclude the scoring. The Skyhawks only scoring opportunity came late in the fourth quarter. "I think one of the first things we need to do is to get a balanced running attack," said Schmitt. "Our backs need to get off the ball quicker, but of course the traction Friday was a problem too." It seemed that the weather was trying to strike a blow against the Skyhawks as well. It rained throughout the contest, leaving both teams struggling in the mud. "We did a few things well, but we won't be satisfied until we score a few touch­ downs," said Schmitt. Schmitt expects to see many of the same things from Beloit Catholic as when they were pitted in the Shark conference. "They'll run power leads, and sweeps," he said. "But I think we should be in the game with them The Hornets held the Skyhawks to only eight yards rushing and 69 yards passing. Harvard, mean­ while, picked up 228 yards in the contest. Joe Kost 'Joe Schlender's McHenry Warriors ran their season record to 3-0 With a 13-8 victory over the Gators of Crystal Lake South Friday night at Crystal Lake. The win, the first in the Fox Valley this season also extended the Warrior winning streak to five, as they defeated Jacobs and Crown in the last two games in I960. In a game that the rain prevailed throughout, the Warriors lost no time taking advantage of a Gator miscue to get on the scoreboard. After the opening kickoff, a Gator back fumbled on the first play and Kelly Gartner pounced on the ball for the Warriors on the Gator 40. Two] four hit him with a 31 yard paa the Gator nine. After failing on two downs to move the ball, Mullen found Tom Lynk all alone in the endzone and the Warriors led at 8:38 of the period. Mulluen then kicked the PAT and the Warriors led 7-0. % After the kickoff, the Warriors forced the Gators to punt, but when a Warrior muffed the ball, the Gators recovered on the 5 yard line. But Crystal Lake fumbled again on the first play with Dave Kueffner recovering on the 11. Neither team could muster any type of offense in the rain and after an exchange of punts the period ended with the Gators on the Warrior 48. Again both teams failed to gain and had to exchange punts with the Gators punting into the end zone at the 6:00 mark. The Warriors attempted to get another score, but were forced to punt at the Gator 40. With time running out the Gators regrouped for a final assualt. With fourth down and 12 the Gators go ta break on pass interference to the Warrior 42. The 'it' for Shaffer, McHenry high school's volleyball coach, was her first win of the season which was accomplished in straight sets 15-6 and 15-7. Playing by far the best match of their six this season, the Warriors were successful on their first serve and spike of the evening and were on their way. they trailed 3-2 in the first set, but Mice they caught up they never looked back. McHenry also led the entire second game. Senior Donna Chesler led the Warriors in sporing with 10 points. She also made 11 out of 12 serves which in­ cluded two aces. Andee Norton chipped in with seven points while Chris Iacullo had six. Another pltii for the Warriors was the addition of Heidi Heinz who became eligible to play on Wed­ nesday. Heinz adds strength to the Warriors front line as she is a legitimate spiking threat. "We were really on tonight," said a satisfied Shaffer. "We were psyched to win against Central and we finally played the way we're capable of." Statistically, McHenry also played its best match of the season as only seven of 48 serves were missed, all of which were in the second set. In the first set, the Warriors also connected on 30 out of 33 spikes. Coach Karen Kraft's freshmen-sophomore team also savored success Thursday night by sweeping the Tigers 16-14 and 20-18. McHenry will travel to Woodstock on Monday, then host Crown on Wednesday, Sept. 30 in a 4:30 p.m. match.
