It is said that how a team fares at Peoria, so will it fare in state. If that be the case, then Bill Hutchinson's McHenry high school team may very well finish with its best mark ever. The Warriors finished second Saturday among the field of 45 teams with a total of 170 points. York high school of Elmhurst suc­ cessfully defended its title with a low score of 47 points. The Dukes won their third straight Peoria Invitational and are also the defending state champions. The top 35 finishers in the three mile course received awards, which included three runners from McHenry. Over 300 runners competed in the race. Mark Jerger of York was the event champion finishing in a time of 14 minutes and 38 seconds. The meet record is held by Ron Craker also of York who finished in 14:10 in 1975. The top finisher for the Warriors was sophomore Steve Carby who came in fifteenth in a time of 15:07. The other award, winners were senior Wade Cepulis, twenty-third in 15:15; and freshman Chris Creutz, thirty-first in 15:22. The remaining /"four finishers for McHenry were Brian Wright, 41 in 15:31; Gordy Bourey, 60 in 15:44; Marty Koleno, 131 in 16:15; and Ron Ostrander, 203 in 16:43. As a team, the Warriors were also thirteenth in last year's event. Earlier last week Thur­ sday, the Warriors ran their record to 12-1 on the season by winning a triangular meet held at West Campus. Against Woodstock, McHenry placed the five runners en route to an easy 15-50 victory over the Blue Streaks. The Warriors also defeated Cary Grove 16-45. Rounding out the scoring, Cary Grove defeated Woodstock 21-37. Gordy Bourey and. Wade Capulis ran neck and neck throughout the course and finished first and second with only a second seperating their times. Bourey finished in 16:11, while Cepulis came in at 16:12. Steve Carby and Brian Wright also ran close together throughout the race and finished third and fourth with times of 16:25 and 16:35, respectively. Marty Koleno also figured in the Warriors scoring with a sixth place finish in 17:10; and was followed by Ron Ostrander, seventh in 17:13; Jeff Wallace, tenth in 17:24; Jim Wynveen, thirteenth in 17:48; and Wally Henshall, fifteenth in 18:10. Chris Creutz placed first in the event witn a time of 11:26, and was followed by teammates Brian Ahlgrim, second in 11:50; Erich Gaza, third in 12:06; and Jeff Pankiewicz, fourth in 12:14. Other McHenry finishers were: Tom Wynveen, eighth in 12:25; Don Brizzi, twelfth in 12:52; and Mike Widhalm, twenty-first in 14:06. In the girls face, McHenry was defeated 27-32 by Woodstock but the Warriors topped Cary Grove 24-32. Delia Saunders was the top Warrior finisher as she came in second overall with a time of 12:59. She was followed by Pam Bradley, third in 13:25; and Mary Bazan, fourth in 13:28. Other finishers for McHenry included Tiffany Hinger, fourteenth in 14:49; Deb Smith, twenty-second in 10:14; and Amy Cepulis, twenty-third in 17:13. Hutchinson's harriers will be off until Thursday, Oct. 15 when they travel to Car- pentersville for a triangular meet with Dundee and Crown. Carl Moesche Sure-footed style.
