After his own terrifying flirtation with death, actor Larry Hagman is dedicating his life to helping America kick the srfipking habit for good. Larry hopes his own "shock" method will help other heavy smokers. "I had an X-ray taken of my lungs, and what I saw made me faint," Hagman said. Convinced that he was near death, Hagman quit "cold turkey\and has never touched the weed since. "And just to strengthen my resolve, I taped the X-ray to my shaving mirror," he added. He's urging every one of the 50 million American smokers to kick the filthy habit for 24 hours on November 19 in this year's Great American Smokeout. And he hopes that a day of abstinence will en courage many smokers to quit forever. "Larry Hagman is probably the No. 1 personality on television today," said American Cancer Society spokesman Irving Rimer. "Everyone looks up to him and his campaign will give anti-smoking a big boost," Rimer told me. TV BACKSTAGE: When actor George Hamilton ap peared on Gary Collins' "Hour Magazine" TV show, he didn't hesitate to unzip his trousers to prove his tan is all over his body. He turned sideways to avoid any censor ship problems, but the producers plastered a sign over the screen just in case . .. Sexy Rita Jer., atte, the Con gressman's wife who threatened to topple Washington with her bedsheet revelations, has been quietly tapped by top NBC-TV executives to replace Rona Barrett on "The Tomorrow Show." The bewitching blonde should join host Tom Snyder early this fall--and her selection has his full approval. The decision to pick Rita camp only days after she was dropped from her planned movie debut alongside Morgan Fairchild. Rita's arrival will end the long-running feud between Synder and Rona. Rona, freed of late night responsibilities, will concentrate on her specials and the "Today" show. TV CLOSEUP: What's moo? Cosmic Cow, TV's newest star is smiling with Ted Knight because their hit sit com, "Too Close For Com fort" is riding high on the network rating charts--with over 28,000,000 fans tuned 'in every week. As cartoonist Henry Rush, Ted can only draw his famous Cosmic Cow comic strip when he wears and talks to the pup pet on his hand. Very amoozing! The show's all- star cast also includes Nancy Dussault as Ted's wife, Muriel, and Deborah Van Valkenburgh and Lydia Cor nell as his two beautiful daughters who live in the Rush's downstairs apartment. Miss Piggy watch out! " Ted Knight
