ROCK ON by Ethlle Ann Vara ALBUM REVIEW The artist Roky Erickson The album The Evil One The label 415 Records Roky Erickson came to na tional prominence (and later disgrace) as leader of the 60's psychedelic band 13th Floor Elevators. Official harassment of the self-admitted drug using group caused them to break up and Roky to spend some time in a mental institution. Erickson returns now to the music scene with an album of songs peopled by aliens, demons, monsters, vampires, zombies and alli gators. A cutt following has built up around Erickson with many of its members born after his 'hit' song "You're Gonna Miss Me" dented the charts in 1966. His live performances are well thought of, but his work is unsettling. Mainly, his come back is--in a nutshell--inex plicable. Roky Erickson sounded unique. Today, it gets played because it sounds like something else," said Tom Ver la ine i n Bi l l boa rd magazine . . . This week marks the 4th anniversary of the Lynyrd Skynyrd airplane crash. Their music died on October 20, 1977. UPDATE As the pricevOf LPs increase, so do the sales of 45s. Singles have increased their market share from 5 percent to 10 per cent over the past three years. People are getting the feeling that two songs for a buck and a half is a pretty good deal com pared to ten songs for nine dollars--especially if the single's 'B' side is good, and the album is half filler. . . Another response to high record prices is the Rent-A-Record chain, opening up in the U.S. after success in Canada. The stores lease you an LP at $2.50 for three days. There is a potential problem with legalities, though, as regards bootleg home taping --and the record companies are not at all keen on the con cept . . . When Meat Loaf's Dead Ringer LP entered the British charts at No. 1 it seem ed slightly surprising. When one noticed that the Rolling Stones Tattoo You entered that same week's chart and only came in at No. 2, it was downright flab bergasting . . . Next week in Rock On, Dick Clark reflects on 30 years of "American Band stand." SURVEY PERSONALITIES "Bag One," John Lennon's 1969 collection of lithographs --once seized by Scotland Yard for alleged obscene con tent--have been bought by an art collector in Seattle. He plans to put the exhibit on tour, like King Tut . . . Quote of the Week-. "Ten years ago, radio played a song because it Have you sent in your picks for best album/song/group/art ist of 1981 yet?
