Figuring in the Warriors' recent downfall has been the absense of star spiker Donna Chester. -* After the tour nament, the returning all- conference player suffered torn ligamenfe in her knee during a physical education accident, and she has been lost for the season. Pdfh Shaffer's squad now stands at 4-8 in the Fox Valley conference and has an overall record of 9-11. Monday night against Woodstock, the Warriors went three sets before bowing to the Blue Streaks for the second time this season. Woodstock won the opening set 16-14, lost the second set 15-4, then won the deciding third set 15-10. In the first set, the score was tied six different tinies before Woodstock prevailed. At one point in the contest, however, McHenry had led 8-2. The Warriors jumped out to a 10-0*lead in the second set behind the serving of Jodi Werhane. Placed .into the starting lineup the replacement for Chesler, Werhane served for seven of. (hose first 10 points. After Woodstock tallied four times, Andee Norton put the game away with five straight serves. In the deciding third set, McHenry again locked horns with Woodstock as the game was tied five times The Warriors last lead was at 9-8, but then the Blue Streaks ran away with the victory despite two time outs by Shaffer W e r h a n e t o p p e d McHenry's effort on the night by serving for 10 points. "She really came through for us,"" said Shaffer "She - wasn't a regular until Chesler's in jury, but she's filled in and done a good job." Senior Pam West followed in scoring with eight' points, while Chris Iacullo and Norton each had seven, and Heidi Heinz had five. Although scoring only two points, Joan Stelmack was the spark plug for the Warriors as she led the team in bumps, and she made several diving saves on apparent Woodstock points. The other post tournament losses were also to Fox Valley conference opponents Crystal Lake South and Jacobs. Against Central, McHenry won the opening set 16-14 after trailing 14-10. West came on to serve six straight points for the vic tory. The Warriors dropped the second and third sets on the evening, however, by scores of 15-5 and 15-12. West led McHenry in scoring with 13 points, and Stelmack again hustled all over the court and came up with a team high 39 Sets. Against Jacobs, the Warriors fell in straight sets by scores of 15-13 and 15-11. West again sparked her team with a leading eight points, while making all 10 of her spikes. Heinz added 16 of 19 spikes to the effort also. In the Zion-Benton tour nament, McHenry opened with a victory over North Chicago The Warriors won the opener 15-7, lost the second set 18-16 after being ahead 11-2, then won the finale 15-6. . Norton led the team with 16 points, while Heinz added 12. McHenry next defeated Antioch in straight sets by scores of 15-8 and 16-14. The Warriors' first loss came against Grant in the third game as the Bulldogs won the opener 15-8, lost 15- 11, then won 15-11 although they had a 13-0 lead at one point. Chesler had 10 blocks and Stelmack added five against a tall Grant team that had beaten the Warriors earlier in the season. In the playoff game for third place, McHenry topped Warren in straight sets 15-11 and 15-12. Playing in what would be her last game of the season, Chesler connected on all 15 of her serves and finished with a leading 13 points. Iacullo was right behind making all eight serves and finishing with seven points. In the Dundee freshmen- sophomore invitational held Saturday, coach Karen Kraft's McHenry team finished in second place. The young Warriors defeated host Dundee and then Crystal Lake South, before losing to Jacobs in the final. All three games were decided in two straight sets. McHenry will travel to Crown on Wednesday, Oct 21, then host Cary Grove on Friday, October 23 in the last regular season game t>f the year. Carl Moesche Netters 5th In Conf. The Huskies im proved their record to 7-5. The game was relatively close throughout as neither team could score in the first half. The Huskies scored two goals in the closing minutes of the second half, however, to pull out the win. McHenry actually led in free hits 40 to 37 over Oak Park, but couldn't get in scoring position in almost the entire second half. Karen Karpavicious starred as goalie for McHenry with numerous saves and Ilene Smith and Lee Tomlinson also played well defensively, noted coach John Sytsma. Earlier, the Warriors were beaten 2-1 at Antioch scoring their lone goal in the second half, while Antioch scored twice in the first half. Kelly Brough tallied the goal for McHenry on an assist from Lynn Podpora. Brough has now scored all three goals for McHenry this season. "We had a lot more op portunities to score than they did, especially in the second half, but we just couldn't put the ball in the net," said Sytsma. Sytsma singled out the efforts of Brough and Podpora for their play at the forward positions, and also the defense of Tomlinson and Karpavicious again, who helped shut out the Sequits i the second half. 7 r McHenry high school's tennis team finished in fifth place with 26 points in the Fox Valley conference meet held in Crystal Lake this weekend Crystal Lake South won the meet scoring 61 Vi points and was followed by Cary Grove, second with 493/<; Crystal Lake Central, third with 32V4; and Dundee, fourth with 30Vfe. Following McHenry was Woodstock in sixth place with 16^ points; Jacobs^ seventh with 5^4; and Crown, eighth with 4Vfe points. In number one singles, the Warriors' Julie Larkin dropped her opening match to Chris Devine of Cary Grove by scores of 6-0 and 6- 2. Larkin was then beaten by Dundee's Cindy Roller 6-1, 6- 1 and was out of the com petition. Sophomore Kris Sorling dropped her opening match in number two singles 6-2,6-1 to Cathy Fink of Crystal Lake South, but then she won her next two matches to win the consolation cham pionship,. She first defeated Karen Anderson 6-4, 6-1, then won over Karen Reinhardt 7-6, 7- 6 in the finale. Laurie Campbell began her number three singles competition with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Crown's Mary Beth Barwig. But she then lost to eventual champion . Lynn Brockway of Cary Grove; then also to Mary Whitsenberg of Crystal Lake Central by scores of 7-5, 6-2 to finish fourth in the con ference. McHenry's number one doubles team of Jenny Prust and Chris Knox opened with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Woodstock's Julie Boyle and Mary Ann Hucht. They then defeated Ann Blayton and Pam Anderson of Dundee 6- 3, 4-6, 6-2; before losing to eventual champions Karen Hall and Shirley Steffens of Crystal Lake South by identical 6-1 scores. In number two doubles, Leah Melahn and Kelli Williams opened with a 6-0, 6-3 loss to Melissa and Michele Mouhil of Crystal Lake Central. The Warrior girls rallied, however, defeating Kendra France and Kathy Heinz of Crown 6-1, 6-0; and then Mindi Spear and Channing Wilson of Woodstock 6-1, 6-4 to become the consolation champions. Harth was the only runner from McHenry competing against a field of 110 runners from nine school districts. The state winner was Chris Saunders of North junior high school in Crystal Lake. Harth placed fourth in the district October 13 at Veterans Acres, and he was an individual qualifier for state with a time of 11:41. Harth is also a member of the Lakers cross country team which placed first in the National Junior Olym pics cross country meet held last December in Wyoming. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Terrance Harth, McHenry.
