OCTOBER 21,1M1 By facing five runners in the top 10 spots, McHenry high school's cross country team finished first in the McHenry County cross country meet held Saturday at Woodstock. The victory marked the first time ever for coach Bill Hutchinson at the county meet. The Warriors placed five runners in the top 10 spots and won the nine school event with only 31 points. In fourth place was Woodstock with 125 points followed by Johnsburg, fifth with 131; Jacobs, sixth wijLh 137; Marian Central, seventh with 148; Crystal Lake South, eighth with 165; and Harvard, ninth with 248. Pat McDaniel of Crystal Lake Central was the event medalist in the three mile course with a time of 15 minutes and 37 seconds. Senior Wade Cepulis topped the Warriors' effort with a third place finish in 15:43. He was followed by Steve Carby, fifth in 15:51; Chris Creutz, sixth in 16:07; Gordy Bourey, seventh in 16:08; Brian Wright, 10th in 16:20; Jim Wynveen, 21st in 17:22; and Wally Henshall, 25th in 17:39. Johnsburg was paced by junior Jay Jackson who finished in ninth place with a time of 16:11. Also figuring in the scoring for the Skyhawks were Mike Steck, 17th in 17:06; Joe Kalisek, 27th in 17:50; Paul Metzger, 38th in 19:00; and Steve Kalsch, 40th in 19:06. Marian Central, ranked 16th in the Class A Power ratings, was led by senior Tom Wottreng with a 19th place finish in a time of 17:15. Other Hurricanes that placed were Bob Hartmann, 20th in 17:18; Dave Cot- teleer, 30th in 18:06; Tony Wember. 36th in 18:56; and John Zabielski, 43rd1n 19; 29. Johnsburg was seventh with 157 points as only Lydia Oakley and Missy Davis competed; and McHenry was last with 183 points as only Amy Cepulis ran. Marian Central won the freshmen-sophomore race as John Wottreng finished first with a time of 16:45 to lead the field McHenry was sixth with 148 points as Erich Gaza finished 10th; and Johnsburg finished seventh with 153 points as Chris Tennison and Ken Schoenig came in 22nd and 29th. respectively. ^ In the boys freshmen race, Woodstock captured first place with 39 points John sburg finished third and McHenry fourth, despite a first place finish by Brian Ahlgrim Mike Lawrence led Johnsburg finishing second. Earlier in the week, McHenry ran its dual meet record to 14-1 on the year by easily winning a triangular meet against Dundee and Crown. In September, Dundee won 93-75 at McHenry. Thursday night, one McHenry varsity record was broken. In the 100 yard freestyle event, senior Terri Blume Gail Petty established a new best in a time of 1:00.6. Rockford Auburn finished first in the Invitational. The only first place finish at Rockford was turned in by Lisa Heidi Dass Thorne who accumulated 148.7 points in the diving Dianna Gregg competition. Gina Jernberg, with 120.48 points in the diving, Chris Grabowski was McHenry's only seconaplace finisher. Finishing third Ui theiheet were Dianna Gregg, 1:39.64 in the 100 f ard butterfly; and also the freshmen-sophomore 200 freestyle relav team Danielle Johnson that finished in 2:00.8p. Mike Shanahan's team, now 3-5 on the year, will travel to Stevenson on Thursday, Oct. 22, then finish out the regular season at home against Woodstock on Thursday, Oct. 29. "Both girls played very well, but Stamm was able to return most of Miller's shots which helped her to win In the doubles com petition, it was all Marian as both of the Hurricane teams advanced to the finals In the first round, Heidi Reihansperger and Joanne Hanrahan defeated Gayle Newquist and Alice Hopp of Hononegah 10-0 Also in the first round, Rhonda Gray and Gale Crary of Marengo topped Kim Colamer and Jeanette Ready of Johnsburg 10-3; Stacey Naleway and Cindy Guetzloff of Johnsburg defeated Cheryl Hedrick and Carol Boeckler of Marengo 11-9; and Sue Bolger and Gina Glpin of Marian easily won over Robin Mortensen and Dawn Chiodini of Hononegah 10-1. In the second round, Reihansperger-Hanrahan defeated Gray-Crady in straight sets 6-2, 6-0; and Bolger-Gilpin topped \aleway-Guetzloff 6-1, 6-0 to make it an all Marifcn final. The championship match in the doubles competition has not yet been completed, hut since it is an all Marian final the final team points can be calculated.
