\ Skyhawk Spikers Seeking Victory At Own District P>USEX,- PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23.1981 The johnsburg high school volleyball team evened its SHARK conference record at 3-3 Tuesday night by defeating ^ Harvard in straight sets 15-7 and 16-14. The Skyhawks improved their overall record to 12-7, which includes a 7-1 mark for the month of October. Coach Kathy Bull's Skyhawks avenged an earlier three set loss at Harvard. "I was very impressed with the way our team played," she said "Our goal this season is to not let any team beat us twice, and so far we've split with everyone except Marian." Johnsburg will be at Marian Thursday night. In the first of the two game set, Harvard jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead, but Johnsburg rallied to take a 4-3 lead on serves by Patti Haag. All of the Skyhawk servers were on target in the first game, especially Diane Heard who put the game away. With the score 11-7 in favor of Johnsburg, Heard came on to serve for the next five points and the win. The Skyhawks struggled in the early going of the second set as the Hornets again took a lead, this lime 4-3. But Cheri Kofler find Haag served Johnsburg back into a 8-6 lead. The Hornets struck right back by eight quick points to take a commanding 14-9 lead. But the Skynawks would not quit. Playing some of the best volleyball that the team has played this year, Johnsburg fought its way bade into the contest on spikes by Heard, Haag, Sue Dehn, ana Norine O'Neill. Theresa Hauck benefited from her teammates spikes by serving for five straight points giving Johnsburg a 16- 14 come from behind victory. "Towards the end, we really had our whole team involved in the scoring," said Bull. "Our setters dia a great Job getting the ball to our spikers." Earlier in the week, Johnsburg lost to Richmond in straight sets by scores of 11-15 and 10-15. "We didn't play up to our p o t e n t i a l a g a i n s t Richmond," she added. "We had a bad night and we slumped, but I think we'll be ready to peak next week at On The Sideline With Dick Rabbitt A couple of bouquets are in order for Warrior performances oover the past weekend. Bill Hutchinson and Running Warriors" won the McHenry County meet fcpWoodstock last Saturday defeating an old rival stal d be Crystal Lake Central in the process. These two teams will square off tomorrow at Lake in the Fox Valley Conference meet. It sh< another battle down to the wire. ' A bouquet to Mike Nank, senior member of the Warrior Klf team who qualified for the State Finals as an iividual. Maybe next year some Warriors will get their act together and the complete team can qualify for the finals. Anyway the Warrior did himself proud at Peoria last weekend in the windy, chilly weather that saw scores soar higher than usual. The girls' tennis team of Gary Gray did as expected in the Fox Valley last weekend. Competition is tough these days, and the coach is proud of his team on their weekend performance. After having a hot streak, Pam Shaffer's volleyball team fell behind and lost a couple of close ones in the Fox Valley, and will be struggling to get back to .500 for the Reason. At this present writing, the Fox Valley football title is really up for grabs. If the Warriors can bet the Tigers tomorrow, it is possible for a four-way tie with two games remaining. I have had several calls, and a few have asked about the procedure for determing a conference winner in a case of ties. If two teams tie for the conference, the winner of the meeting between the two will be selected as the conference representative. If there or more teams tie another process will be taken. A10 point system is established. If the difference in any game is more than 10 points, the total above 10 points will not be used. A winning team can accumulate a maximum of plus 10 points while a losing team could receiye a maximum of minus 10 points. An example is Crystal Lake Central's 24-0 win over Jacobs last week. Central received a plus 10, while Jacobs received a minus 10. This prevents 3 team of running up a score on an opponent. As it matters not how tag the score is. only 10 points will count. Another example is the Warriors' 18-14 win over Cary Grove several weeks ago. The Warriors got plus 4, while the Trojans had a minus 4. If ties continue to exist after this method, then non- conference games will be counted, as mentioned earlier this season. Classes above, even and below will be taken into consideration. This is why^ou seldom see teams schedule a team in a lowr classificatiion if at all possible. The only reason a team would do this is that the opponent is a natural rival, or a huge crowd is expected ana will add to the treasury of the schools. My picks with the crystal ball haven't been too good lately, although a five hundred percent is not too bad considering how I pick the professional football teams. This week I pick Woodstock to rebound and defeat Jacobs on Friday night at Woodstock. South, after their big win at Woodstock to defeat Cary Grove in the upset of the day. Crown to beat Dundee in a real dogfight, and the Tigers to beat the Warriors, ana of course I hope I am wrong in this one. Marian to defeat Marengo, and Hononegah to defeat the Skyhawks. districts, and that's what we want." . After hosting SHARK opponent Marengo on FYiday, Johnsburg will host the District championships next week. The tournament begins Tuesday at Johnsburg, but the Skyhawks will be idle until Thursday when they play the winner of the Hebron- Willows Academy match. "If we have everyone healthy, we should do very well," Bull concluded.
