Farm Bureau Offers Defensive Driving Mock Disaster Shortly after 7 a.m. Sunday the first calls went out - there was a fire of unknown size at a "factory" in Ringwood. The fact that this was a drill did not matter at Company I fire fighters headed north. At right, the first truck arrives on the scene and begins to assess the problem at hand. Almost immediately calls are made for more men and equipment, and departments from all over eastern McHenry and western Lake counties responded. As the fire fighters discovered the scope of this "factory fire", calls for Rescue squad and emergency medical units were made. There were more than 30 injured "victims" at this, mock disaster who had to be assessed, treated and transported without undue delay. Fire, rescue and police personnel instituted the county disaster, which is a systems approach to the handling of disasters. Below, trained emergency medical personnel prepare to move one of the many people "pinned" under I- beams in the "factory." Below right, fire fighters aid in the transportation of the victim to the appropriate area. The fire fighters practiced the various methods used in combatting a blaze and dealing with hazardous materials likely to be found in a factory. The emergency medical personnel worked on improving field treatment and transportation of the injured. All together, fire and rescue units from McHenry, Johnsburg, Spring Grove, Richmond, Wonder Lake, Fox Lake, Crystal Lake, Wauconda, Woodstock, Nunda and even Algonquin responded to the training exercise. "This program is for all drivers and can serve as a refresher course for everyone" said Mrs. Leona Luerssen, chairman of the Farm Bureau Women's committee which is spon soring the program. "It is a fine program for new drivers, but experience shows that veteran drivers learn from it, too. Many school districts ask their bus drivers to participate. New developments in responding to situations are discussed by the instructor. "Movies and demon strations in cooperation with the National Safety council make this a valuable program." The course will be given from 6:30 to 10 p.m. both evenings. Only cost is for the workbook and other materials. People are asked to register by contacting the Farm Bureau so adequate materials can be ordered in advance. * * • • J^Jjg^g^y^yg^gJ^WEDNESDAY^OCTOBUER^j^lSl Making money easy is the hard way.
