For those who have contemplated the idea but feel they need more information about the subject, the "Heating With COMING SOON WXRD ANDSHOWPLACE V --presents HALLOWEEN NIGHT AT THE MOVIES! Oct. 31st AT 11:30 pm featuring Wood" program planned for Tuesday, Nov. 3, may be just what they are looking for. Sponsored by the McHenry county chapter of Illinois Audubon society, the program will cover such topics as what kind of stoves best suit various situations, how to safely install them, where to get free firewood, how to cut and split wood and how to manage your own woodlot. The program will begin at. 7:30 at Central elementary school, 131 Paddock, Crystal FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the flies of November 5, 1931). At the regular City Council meeting it was moved by Alderman Doherty that Atty. Cowlin be allowed $150 for full settlement of all 'ac­ counts up to date with Atty. Smiley. This bill was originally $250. Fifty dollars had been paid on account. The bill was for services rendered in defending the city in a damage suit caused by an auto running into the street marker at the corner of Green and Pearl streets about two or three years ago. The September petit jury reported to start work on the common law docket in the Circuit court. Members of the petit jury from McHenry are George P. Freund, Math Glosson, Frank J. Klap- perich, George Freund and Paul J. Brefeld. Mrs. F. O. Gans and family have moved to the S.H. Freund home recently vacated by Mr. and Mrs. John Stilling. The report indicated clearly that rain water is being led into the sewer lines instead of into the storm sewers. The condition is being corrected. Youths showed again that "youth must be served". In a match between high school girls versus boys, Marilyn Schaefer rolled a 459 series. Nadine Schaefer had high game and Betty Regner was the third girl on the team and all were over 400. One large group of about 50 youngsters was encouraged to disband when found wandering through the cemeteries on Richmond road, just north of town, but no damage was recorded by local police. The night was in contrast to Halloweens of not too many years ago, when businessmen fearfully ap­ proached their stores the following morning, ex- pecting--and many times rightly so-- to And almost anything blocking their entrance. It was many times several weeks before the last bit of wax disappeared from business and home windows. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of November 12, 1971). Father William O. Hanner, D.D. of Whispering Oaks, had the distinction of giving the opening prayer at the $500-a-plate dinner held in the Conrad Hilton hotel, Chicago. Father Hanner is retired from the Episcopal diocese of Chicago, having served as rector of the Kenilworth Holy Comforter church. Father Hanner described the political leaders, President Nixon and his wife, Vice-President Agnew and Mrs. Agnew, Senator Percy and others as "just folks" as they mingled with the huge crowd. Bryan O'Neill, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mark O'Neill, Regner road, McHenry, was awarded top prize in the annual mathematics tour­ nament for junior high students held at Carmel High School for Boys, Mundelein. Mark is an eighth grade student at Montini Middle school. WELCOME NEW'MEMBERS-Pluured are new members received at Shepherd of the Hlllt Lutheran church on Sunday. The hand of fellowship was extended to a group of new members at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran church, 404 North Green street, McHenry, Sunday. New members were introduced to the congregation during the 10:45 a.m. worship service and were presented cer­ tificates of church mem­ bership by Pastor Roger Schneider. During the announcement period at the end of the worship service, all mem­ bers were invited to stand and greet each other as well as the new members in order to always maintain an at mosphere of friendliness The new members were guests at a fellowship gathering held immediately after worship which was hosted by Laverne and Ardys Roepke and Henry and Helen Kot. New members received included Kenneth and Liv Schweigert, Brett Sch- weigert, Martin Hughes, and John and Mil Albrecht. Doctor's View Of Alcoholism For SPACE TRANSFER STUDENT Timothy Serritella, son of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Serritella, 4916 Shore drive, McHenry, is among 72 students who have tran­ sferred to Lake Forest college this fall. He is a transfer from McHenry County college. The SPACE (St. Patrick Alcoholism Caring , En­ deavors) team will have Dr. Z. Ted Lorenc present "A Doctor's Viewpoint of Alcoholism" Tuesday evening, Nov. 3, at 8 p.m. Dr. Lorenc, an internist, with offices in Crystal Lake, will present an interesting medical viewpoint of alcoholism so anyone can understand about the di­ sease. This is the second time Dr. Lorenc is ap­ pearing. SPACE will have the remainder of their weekly sessions each Tuesday evening through Dec. 1 at-St. Patrick's parish hall, 3500 W.
