There is an old cliche that an expert must come from at least 50 miles away. At a recent inservice for District 156 teachers, several staff members proved that ex pertise is really a function of experience and knowledge. These local experts shared their knowledge of audio visual techniques and equipment with their fellow staff members and were lauded for their efforts. Those making the audio visual presentations were the following staff mem bers: Jean Sund, East campus audio-visual aide, demonstrated laminating a n d d r y - m o u n t i n g techniques for developing display materials, and A1 Olsen, a Mathematics teacher, shared his knowledge about the use of videotape equipment in cluding how to film with a videotape camera to produce visual materials for classroom use. The production of slide-tape presentations was taught by Tony Stumbris, an Industrial Arts teacher, and Phil Aack, a Science teacher. In addition, Linda Usrey, the East campus media director, and Mary Jane Peters, the West campus media director, demon strated the proper use and upkeep of the district's audio-visual equipment. They also planned and coordinated this local in- service effort. BUDDY'S WORKSHOP Mildew Treatment Is ncCuuiuiciiUtii WWUC1 u. lO-rt, 111 DUU D of Deeds, page 345, in M c H e n r y C o u n t y . The topic this week is "Repeating the Past.") One sunny fall afternoon, a small girl watched with intense curiosity, as her mother prepared a roast for the evening meal. As she continued quietly observing, she noticed something that struck her as being a bit strange. What she noticed, was that before placing the roast in the pan, her mother first cut off one of the ends. Unable to contain her curiosity a minute lbnger, she asked her mother why it was that she cut off the end of the roast before putting it in the pan. "I really don't know" replied her mother "I' do it because this is the way my mother always did it;" Loving a good mystery, the little girl excitedly responded "then lets ask grandma." So they went off to grandma and asked her. The little girl was disap pointed however when she received the same answer that her mother had given her. "I really don't know" her grandmother replied "that's how my mother did it." Persistant till the end, the little girl visited her great grandmother and repeated her question. "Why do you always cut off the end of the roast?" Oh that's simple. I only have a very small roasting pan and most roasts just will not fit into it unless I first cut the end off. Upon hearing this the little girl laughed and wondered to herself about the foolishness of adults who mechanically repeat behaviors that made sense in the past but make no sense now. She promised herself that she would never become that kind of adult and that if she ever found herself doing something that did not work, she would try something else rather than continue to do the same old thing.
