"" tAKl WALbH So I Hear Like the swallows returning to Capistrano, the sparrows returned en masse to our back forty the same day we hung out the bird feeders. One way to black out rtoward Cossell and the hoopla noise on TV during the World Series is to keep the picture, turn off the sound and turn on the radio. When they turn the camera on players' wives, you get the idea they are praying hard and dying a slow death So. loveable George Steinbrenner got into a punching match in an elevator When his manager, Billy Martin, punched a mar- shmallow salesman at a bar, George fired him. Now we expect Com missioner Kuhn to decide whether or not Yankee George is good for baseball. I still say it is easier to fire a coach than the whole team when they can't win for losin'. Some fans think I was too generous with Coach Arm strong, mainly because he failed to inspire the Bears.. The feeling was that Arm strong is a nice fellow, one of those nice fellows who finish last The appraisal may be true In all fairness though, I am waiting for some writer, fan, or Owner George Halas to give Armstrong one little bit of credit for the Bears' stunning victory over San Djego last Sunday. The lime has come to dream about laced up dress shoes that covered the ankles. No man would be seen wearing oxfords during the winter in earlier days. The time has also come to think of the days when the ladies got together at this time of year for a quilting bee. My mother had quilting frames that were passed around. At our house the parlor, which was closed off during cold weather, was opened and the frames set up. The ladies sewed colorful little blocks in advance, then arranged them in attractive fashion in making the quilt. It probably was work, but I always sensed the gals were having a real sociable time. Stopping for lunch or a cup of tea added to their en joyment. The quilts were beautiful - -- and warm. Not so many things were store-bought in those days Took tune out to turn on the TV for evening news and believe it or not we saw pictures of a quilting bee in West Chicago. Denny Conway warned me Sunday night that I was going to lose my bet with "Big John" on the World Series. If the rain continues or turns to snow, there may not be a winner this year.
