Shore Drive, McHenry. Usually about a foot in length, some of these gourds measured 24 inches. Bowlin said the gourds are used for table decorations and wren houses. State Highway Deaths Hit 142 In September The Superintendent of Illinois State police, Ronald J. Miller, announced the latest figures which show that during the month of September, 142 persons died from injuries sustained from traffic accidents on Illinois streets and Highways. State police, District 2, which covers McHenry, Lake, DeKalb, Kane and DuPage counties reported 204 persons killed since Jan. 1. Two hundred and twelve persons were also killed during the same period last year in these counties. A breakdown of the counties for statistics in September shows Lake county had seven fatalities; McHenry county, four, DuPage county, four; Kane county, six and DeKalb county, three. As a comparison for September of 1980, Lake county had 16 fatalities; McHenry county, five; DuPage county 11; Kane county, one and DeKalb counnty, one. To date in 1981, nearly 1,400 persons have been killed in the entire state in 1981. There were 1,482 persons killed during the same time period of 1980 showing a decrease of 90. D. William Dodds, Thomas Jj Carl and Emory E. Swinney, principals of McHenry East high school, participated in the tenth annual fall conference of the Illinois Principals' association Oct. 18-21. Ap proximately 1,000 principals from throughout the state gathered for this yearly meeting at the Arlington Park Hilton hotel, Arlington Heights. The theme of this year's conference was "A Decade of Progress...A Decade to Achieve--. Members of the association, which serves elementary, junior high and secondary principals, plan and conduct this meeting to provide in formation to principals that will assist them to better serve the schools of Illinois. Dr. Donald Gill, state superintendent of education, was the keynote speaker at the first general session. Michael Broome, president of Tomorrow's America foundation, delivered the address at the annual IPA banquet. Dr. Melvin Heller, chairman of the Department of Educational Ad ministration at Loyola university, spoke at the North Central association luncheon and Joe Newton, head cross country track coach of York high school, Elmhurst, and author of the Long Green Line and Motivation-The Name of the Game, was the presenter at the Illinois High School association luncheon. Eighteen small group sessions, designed to help principals update them selves on current educational trends and practices, were offered Monday afternoon and Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. . On Monday and Tuesday, during the conference, one of the state's largest educational exhibits was held at the conference site, featuring the most up-to- date instructional aids for schools as well as varied exhibits connected directly with the many facets of education today. Dodds, Carl and Swinney alternated attendance at the conference, allowing more coverage of East campuses daily operation. Dodds stated, \ "Con ferences such as the IPA allow us to meet with our counterparts from all over the state to share the latest trends in educational programs. -4-'r" How is a stationary front formed? What causes most of them in fall and winter? A stationary front usually results from the movement of a cold air mass into a mass of warmer air. Instead of forcing a passage and break ing through, sometimes the cold front's winds blow Acreage Reports Important Susan A. Maraccini, ac ting county executive director of the McHenry County Agricultural Stabilization and Con servation service, says 1961 acreage reports now have added importance. Secretary of Agriculture John Block recently an nounced bis intention to implement a 15 percent reduced acreage program for the 1982 wheat crop to offset the effects of record supplies and depressed wheat prices. He also held open the possibility that he may propose a reduced acreage program lata* for feed grains. "It now appears that in order for farmers to par ticipate in an acreage reduction program next year, they must have a 1961 acreage report of wheat and feed grains on file in our office," Ms. Maraccini said. The importance of all farm owners and « operators complying with this request cannot be over-emphasized, she added. Farmers who failed to report by the cer tification deadline should contact the county ASCS office. If the crop acreage and use can be verified, it may still be possible to gain eligibility if the producer covers the expense of a farm visit. If implemented, the reduced acreage program for 1982 wheat will be voluntary. Producers can decide for themselves, based on market conditions, whether they want to par ticipate. Program benefits, however, will be tied to participation. Maraccini said program operating procedures will be issued after pending farm legislation is enacted into law. According to Maraccini, 996 local farms are certified and eligible for 1961 program benefits. McHenry county farmers who have not certified their crops are urged to do so as soon as possible. "To avoid eligibility problems, the reports should be accurate. Farms will be checked to verifty that acreage reports are correct," the ASCS official said. Specialized nursing home care is available in Veterans Administration or private nursing homes for con valescents or persons not acutely ill and not in need of hospital care. Details about eligibility are available at all 172 VA medical centers. Printing is a danger ous device to those who don't want their opinions permanently recorded.
