The victory by Phil Thome's team inproves its overall mark to 7-1 and sets up a showdown this Sunday against Wauconda. Should the Hornets win Sunday, they would be the undisputed champions of the Northern Illinois Junior Football League and would advance to the championship game on November 15 against the Southern Illinois winner. If Wauconda would win, both teams would wind up with identical 7-2 records and be crowned conference co-champions. But since Wauconda beat McHenry in head to head competition, they would advance to the playoffs. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 p.m. at McCracken field. Against Round Lake, McHenry scored two touch downs early in the game, then relied on Joe Podpora's fine defensive unit to hold back Round Lake while its own offense sputtered in the second half. The Hornets kicked off to Round Lake who managed to keep the ball for only two plays before fumbling into the arms of Hornet linebacker Mike Schultz. Starting at the Round Lake 40-yard line, McHenry drove to the goal line in 12 plays with either Schultz or John Diedrich carrying on every down. The drive ended with Schultz carrying the ball over from one yard out to put McHenry on top. The at tempted run for the extra point failed, but the Hornets led 6-0 after their first possession. After getting the ball back on the kickoff, Round Lake gained only three yards on three plays thanks to a Mike Burrell sack and was forced to punt the ball away on fourth down. After a 20-yard effort. M c H e n r y r e g a i n e d possession on its own 45-yard line. Diedrich carried on a sweep for no gain on first down, but on second and 10 he took a reverse handoff and raced 55 yards for the touchdown. The extra point attempt again failed, but the Hornets had their twelfth point of the afternoon. Before the first half ended, McHenry had apparently scored its third touchdown of the game. After recovering a Round Lake fourth down fumble on their own 45-yard line, the Hornets connected on a 65-yard scoring pass from William Cameron to Diedrich. But a clipping penalty wiped out the score and two plays later, McHenry was forced to punt the ball away. The Hornets mustered 95 yards of total offense in the first half, while holding Round Lake to a mere seven yards and denying them a single first down. The second half of play turned into a defensive struggle as neither team could control the ball for more than six plays without either being stopped on downs or turning the ball over. Diedrich and Schultz continued to grind out the yardage as Cameron chose to throw only once in the final 30 minutes. But a pair of fumbles and two blocked punts kept Round Lake in the game Fortunately, the defense rose to the occasion after each turnover to halt Round Lake. McHenry registered five sacks in the second half, four by tackle Dan Laplaca to contain the home team. Hornet linebacker Randy Hawley sealed the victory with an interception on what would be Round Lake's last possession. Laplaca, Diedrich, and Schultz led the defense with six tackles each, while Jim Shaver had three tackles and a pair of sacks. Podpora's defense still has given up but 13 points for the season, while the offense has now scored 141. Diedrich again led the Hornet ground attack with 16 carries for 60 yards, while Schultz finished with 40 yards on 12 attempts. Carl Moesche Hornets Blank Round Lake Clinch Conference Title The McHenry Warriors will host the Crown Vikings in an afternoon tilt at Mc Cracken field tomorrow at 2 p.m. The sophomore game will get underway at noon. The Vikes of Bob Carlson, will be gunning for their first win ever over the Warriors. Going back to the days of the North Suburban and con tinuing into the Fox Valley, the Warriors have never lost to a Crown team. The Vikings are somewhat of a surprise team this year in the conference. A few expected better things, but last week's 42-10 loss to Crystal Lake Central put Crown back in the pack. Carlson, in his third year, has come a long way with the Crown program. The Vikes are led by quarterback Lynn Grant, a two year veteran at the post. The 5'n'p, 160 lb. Grant can run and throw. The Vikings are mainly a running team, running out of the I formation, and Hanson their tailback is one of the leading scorers in the con ference. Their defense is fourth in the league, and the Warriors will have to be at their best to overtake the Vikings. Coach Joe Schlendex is aware of the Crown surge this season. In last week's loss to Jacobs the Wa/rfiors looked like champions; the first period. Then theroof fell in, and they were in trouble the rest of the game. In the final home game of the gai the season* maybe Warriors can obtain their third goal of the season, by having a winning season. The Vikes should be down because of their blowout with Central last week. Let's get out and support the teahi and root them on to a win ning season in the finale.
