ti^iE 1 AlNDEALER - FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13,1981 '•PMI Hp a tARL WALSH A A 1 So I Hear If my eyes would permit me to read everything, I'd like to find a good western story. Not necessarily one where six men hit the dust on the first page. Just a good, old thriller when a man's best friends were a horse and a six-gun. - OVERHEARD. "He holds his nose so high he can't see what's on the level " Grass is a beautiful green as we hit the half way mark in November. Not complaining -- we can wait for it to be covered wtih white stuff. Glad to hear Alderman Harker's health has im proved greatly after a long bout. They built em strong and tough in the old days. Seems kind of handy at times. Had a teacher one time who told us if we ever used a comma instead of a semicolon, she would flunk us. Short sentences prevailed. Warnings are out that squirrels have extra bushy tails this fall -- a sure sign of a hard, long winter. All I know about the present crop of squirrels is that they hog all the bird feed. Must find a feeder those little devils can't climb. If you hit the red light on Green St. (at Elm), you might as well turn off your motor, relax and watch the girls go by. Went up and down Green St. paying bills and told Don Weingart I thought Alvina had me delivering checks to save postage. What do you think he said? "That's just to get you out of the house." Will have to be more ob serving. Parked in front of the Post Office and along comes a girl with a smile and a wave. Twas one of my favorite girls, Barb Hettermann, and DON'T II OUT! Do more than read, ab sorb. Do more than hear, listen. Do more than listen, un derstand. Do more than think, ponder. Do more than talk, say something. Author Unknown Driving down Lincoln road, we saw that terrible fire at Adams Enterprises and couldn't see how the firemen could prevent an entire block from burning to the ground. Our local department, with help from surrounding units, did a remarkable job in preventing further spread of the wicked flames. The McHenry Township fire department has come a long way since our early days when the hose was wound up on a 2-wheel cart which was towed to the fire by the first rig that came along. Those were the days when Borden's whistle gave one, two or three blasts to let the natives know the location of the fire. t I know nothing about fire fighting, but often wonder if the local district will ever own a snorkel. If it is a practical piece of equipment a fund should be started for the purchase. Have been told the cost is on the prohibitive side. Noting the name on the old time picture of "The Bridge" brought back memories of days when the same was named The Polly Prim. Let me tell thee, it was a bit on the lively side in prohibition days. Dear Earl: Your article from Bill and Pauline Pries was sent to us by our daughter Sheila Aleckson. We plan to attend the "McHenry Day" here in Florida. Ex-McHenry people, Betty and Dan O'Shea Ye Olde Plaindealer gets around. Thanks for the card, Betty and Dan. I note you marked the Orlando tem perature at 75 degrees. Just a few degrees higher than we are enjoying.
