The Hornets will now play Winnetka for the championship on Sunday. \ STAFF PHOTO - CARL MOESCHE Plaindealer Rehberg, Lynk Named On Conference Squad Two members of the McHenry high school football team were selected to the Fox Valley all-conference team at the coaches meeting Tuesday night. ley acn On The Sidelines By Dick Rabbitt Well tomorrow is the big day for "Hutch" and his "Running Warriors". For the first time in history the Warriors qualified as a team for the state finals. When you think of the competition they have defeated, just to get to the finals, is quite an accomplishment. With only two seniors on the team, things look bright for the Warriors again next season. York of Elmhurst with the veteran Joe Newton as coach is again the pre-meet favorite. The defending state champs won easily last week, but may have their work cut out for them tomorrow. Remember several weeks ago the Warriors were runnerup to York at the Peoria Invitational. The Warriors have been overlooked this season, even after defeating second ranked Schaumburg in a dual meet Tomorrow would be a nice time for the Warriors to again show their heels to some of the big suburban schools. All Warrior fans are wishing "Hutch" and the team the very best of luck tomorrow. I'm sure there will be a delegation of fans on hand tomorrow at Peoria rooting them on to victory. The football Warriors took it on the chin last Saturday. It was a £>eautiful Saturday afternoon, but a slim crowd was on hand. Crown ran up twenty-two quick first quarter points and went on to a 29-8 victory. Frank Camasta, former resident and a real Warrior fan years ago, dropped in to McCracken field for the game. The former resident now resides in Clinton, Illinois, and said itwas his first Warrior game in 10 years. Cary Grove is the hope of the Fox Valley in the playoffs this week. They played Wheaton North on Weanesday. Last year the Trojans after defeating Sullivan of Chicago in the first round, dropped a 34-6 game to Wheaton. The Falcons are ranked number one in Class 4-A, so the Trojans will have their hands full. Another area team made it to the playoffs. The Rockets of Richmond with a 9-0 record played Pecatonica on Wednesday night. The Rockets shut out five opponents this fall and gave up only 28 pts. in nine games. Pretty good defense I would say. Congratulations to Curt Rehberg and Tom Lynk members of Coach Joe Schlender's "Fighting Warriors". These two were selected to the Fox Valley Conference football team by the coaches at Woodstock on Monday night Co-champ6 Cary Grove and Crystal Lake Central dominated the selections with six each. Both Rehberg and Lynk were praised by opposing coaches for their fine play for the Warriors this season. It is a pleasure to attend such a meeting and see the fairness in which the coaches select the team. It is too bad that we can't settle some of our world problems in the same way. Hornets Win Division Eye Winnetka Rematch The McHenry Hornets won their fifth game in a row and at the same time won the Northern division of the junior football league Sunday afternoon by defeating Wauconda 13-6. The victory concluded the Hornets' season with a 7-1 record in the conference and an 8-1 overall mark. Phil Thome's crew will now host Winnetka, winners of the Southern division, for the junior league championship on Sunday, Nov. 15. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. "It's going to be a grudge game," said Thorne. "There's no doubt about that considering what happened the first time we played them." On October 18, McHenry had apparently lost a 6-0 decision to Winnetka. But later after it was learned that Winnetka illegally switched jersey numbers on some of its players and had also positioned its players illegally during the game, the Hornets were awarded a 2-0 forfeit victory. Against Wauconda, McHenry scored a touch down on its first series of each half, and then hung on to win as Wauconda threatened in the closing minutes of the game. The Hornets received the opening kickoff and mar ched 66 yards for the first score of the game. Fullback Mike Schultz carried off tackle on the seventh play of the drive for the score. The extra point attempt failed, but McHenry led 6-0. Getting the ball for the first time, Wauconda found Joe Podpora's defensive unit implacable as three straight running plays gained only one yard due to the efforts of linemen Jim Shaver, Dan Laplaca, and Mike Burrell. On fourth down, Wauconda was forced to punt the ball away. Neither team managed to mount a drive for the remainder of the half. Following an exchange of punts, Hornet halfback John Diedrich ripped off a 25yard run, then promptly fumbled the ball away on the next play. But Waucoada's last possession in the half ended three plays later when Hornet linebacker William Cameron intercepted a pass. McHenry had one final chance to get into the end zone before intermission, but likewise failed. Diedrich had apparently scored on a 40- yard run, but a holding penalty wiped out the play. Between the efforts of Diedrich and Schultz, the Hornets chewed up 101 yards on the ground and added another 35 through the air on passes by Cameron for a total of 136 yards in the first half. Wauconda by comparison, was held to two first downs and 22 yards total offense. For the ninth consecutive half, Podpora's defense had not allowed a point to be scored against them. After receiving the second half kickoff, Wauconda was again unable to move the ball and punted on fourth down. McHenry then drove 70 yards in five plays for what proved to be the winning touchdown. Diedrich scored on an 11-yard run, and Randy Hawley carried for the extra point extraiding the lead to 13-0. Wauconda fumbled the ball away on its next two possessions, but McHenry likewise couldn't Following a fumble, Wauconda went! passing game and scorrifr touchdown with about Jive minutes remaining'. McHenry's lead was cut to 13-6. Wauconda had one last shot to score after stopping the Hornets on a fake punt inside their own territory. But this time the defense rose to the occasion. After four straight incomplete passes, McHenry got the ball back and ran out the clock. Wauconda finished with HI total yards of which 83 were through the air. McHenry finished with 230 yards total offense, with most of that total coming from the ground. Diedrich was the game's leading rusher with 10 carries for, 98 yards while Schultz ; Was right behind with 13 carries for 84 yards. Shaver led the Hornet defense with eight tackles and also recovered a fumble. Laplaca also recovered a loose ball and had four tackles. Carl Moesche "J I'.l The Fox Lake Central, each placed six members on the squad. Senior guard-linebacker Curt Rehberg and senior tight end- linebacker Tom Lynk were the two players chosen from Head Coach Joe Schlender's team. Rehberg, one of the Warrior tri-captains, led the team with 42 tackles and 48 assists from his linebacker position. He also intercepted four passes during the season and recovered two fumbles. Offensively he was one of Schlender's mainstay's as he started every game at left guard for McHenry. "He was an inspirational leader," Schlender said. "He was also one the most coachable players I ever had and played as much with his head as he did with his body." Another tri-captain, Lynk hauled in seven passes from his tight end position for 148 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, he was credited with 27 tackles, 30 assists, and had one fumble recovery. "He was one of the hardest workers that we had on the team," Schlender added. f *• McHenry ended its 1981 campaign with a 2-5 record in the^ Fox Valley and an overall mark of 4-5. i FOX VALLEY CONFERENCE FOOTBALL ALL CONFERENCE TEAM Name School Hugh Brennan % Cary Grove Joe Graves • * Crystal lake C. Crystal Lake C. * Jacobs Cary Grove Johnsburg Faces Transition Johnsburg high school's basketball team is going through a transition period. Recognized from past seasons as a run-and-gun team, the Skyhawks have a new philosophy from a new coach this year in Ben Beck. After three successful seasons at Malta high school, Beck has taken over at Johnsburg and has im mediately stressed defense over offense. "We're not overpowering and we're not very big," Beck said. "For us to win, we'll have to play tough defense. "Our offense won't be where it will be at the beginning of tlje year," he added. "We've been con centrating on defense during practice." Beck has 15 players on the varsity roster which include eight seniois. and sever, juniors. But of the Skyhawks' three returning lettermen, only Tom Pieper has seen considerable varsity action. The 5'10" guard is a returning second team all- SHARK player who averaged 14.2 points per game last year. Beck will be depending on him to run the offense and perhaps play some swingman this year also. The other returning let termen are seniors Russ Beck and Jeff Bartmann. Beck is a 5'8" guard that averaged 3 5 points per game and Bartmann is the tallest player on the team at 6'2". Averaging 3.0 points per game last season, he is a likely candidate for a starting spot on the front line. Other seniors on the Johnsburg squad include Terry Boyer (5'7"), Dan Nett (5'11"), Joe Meyers (6'1"), Mike Leon (5'11"), and Dan Williams (6'2"), who was the quarterback on the football team. But a problem facing Beck is that of these remaining five seniors, only Leon went out for basketball last year. The rest of the squad will be filled by juniors that will be pushing for playing time. Forwards include Paul Metzger (5'10"), John Hendrickson (5'U"), John Wharton (6'1"), Scott Mc- Clory (5'9"), and Mark Hiller (5'8"). The two junior gttards are Jeff Fowler (5'10") and Jim Leon (5'7"). Recognizing that his team's height won't match up to some schools, Beck will be staying away from a post- up type of offense. "We're not going to run a post offense," he said. "Our offense will be geared towards movement between the guards and the forwards. We're a quick team and we d like to run at every opportunity," he added. "But if don't have the shot, we'll try to run a controlled offense." For Johnsburg, defense is going to be the name of the game. "We want to pressure the ball," Beck added. "We'll play a man-to-man defense and utilize our quickness." Johnsburg has never been below .500 since the school's inception four years ago. Last year the Skyhawks finished 6-6 in the SHARK and were 17-11 overall. "The first part of our schedule will be an early indication of how we are going to do," Beck added. The Skyhawks will be on the road for much of the beginning of the season. By the first of January, they will have only played two home games. "We've got a good group of kids here," Beck concluded. They're getting used to a new coach and a new system, and they're doing well."
