STAFF PHOTO - CARL MOESCHE Local Spikers Dominate All-Conference Squad A Four members from Johnsburg's volleyball team and three members from Marian Central's team have been selected on the SHARK all-conference list Nominated to the first team were seniors Sue Dehn and Cheri Kofler of the Skyhawks and seniors Julie Nylander and Debbie Liggett of the Hurricanes. Conference champion Hononegah filled out the two remaining spots on the first team with seniors Shelly Birkholz and Kelly Mason. Dehn, Johnsburg's number one setter, was also selected the Most Valuable Palyer in the SHARK conference by the conference coaches. Among tho&, selected to the second team were Patti Haag and Norini O'Neill of the Skyhawks and Jean Thompson of the Hurricanes. Johnsburg and Marian Central tied for second place in the SHARK conference with 5-3 records, while Hononegah finished at 6-2. Under the guidance of first-year coach Kathy Bull, the Skyhawks enjoyed their best season ever in the school's four year histoiy finishing at 1&-8. Johnsburg won its own District, won the Marian Central Sectional, then was eliminated in Supersectionals by Immaculate Conception. Despite the winning record, McHenry was not a tall team last year and Ludwig and his assistant coach Terry Reilly face a similar predicament this season. "We're just about in the same boat as last year," Ludwig said. "We're not very big on the front line, but our kids are quick and we'll handle the ball pretty well." The tallest player for McHenry is junior Brad Salman who stands 6'3". The Warriors were also not an experienced team last year and this year is no exception as only two let- term en return, of which one was a regular. The returning regular is Mike Burgdorf, one of the quickest players on the team. The 5'11" Burgdorf averaged 3.9 points per game last season and was second on the team with 66 steals. During his senior year, he will be Ludwig's starting point guard. The other returning varsity performer is senior Dave Smith who saw limited action last year, but will start at one of the post positions. According to Ludwig, the 6'1" Smith will be at the post because he is at his best when he's playing the inside game. Playing across from Smith will be either 6'2" senior Aric Akins or 6'2" junior Steve Babb. Akins has the advantage at this time because of his superior rebounding skills. McHenry's best offensive threat, junior Mike Bauml, is expected to start on a wing position. The 6'0" Bauml is the Warriors' best outside shooter and top all-around offensive player, according to Ludwig. The other wing position is up for grabs. A pair of 5'10" seniors, Dan Long and Dave Williams, appear to have the inside trade' for a starting berth. Another possibility is 6'2" Bill Herrmann. Hie junior is listed as a swingman, but may play wing to strengthen the Warriors' rebounding. Backing up Burgdorf at To State Both the McHenry and the Marian Central cross country teams will be at Peoria Saturday competing in their respective state meets. McHenry, winners of the Lake Forest Sectional a week ago, will make its first- ever trip in Class AA. Marian is making its fifth trip in six years in Class A. Also on the varsity roster are seniors Ben Schweder, Charlie Wegener, and Bob Whalen; and juniors Randy Buenzli, Gary Freund, Scott Grady, Robbi Mortell, Kevin Reed, John Wegener, and Jim Wynveen. "We're not going to be able to board with a lot of teams, but it's going to be a battle when they play us." McHenry is looking to run this year on offense and do a lot of pressing on defense. Ludwig predicts Wood stock, Crystal Lake Central, and Cary Grove to be the early season favorites, and added that Crystal Lake South may be the darkhorse this year. And where does he see McHenry in the race? "That depends on how we do at the start of the season," Ludwig said. "The start is the key. If we get off to a good start, we should have a winning season." McHenry will begin its season on Friday, Nov. 27 against Sterling in the first round of the Sycamore Tournament. The Warriors will play their first home game on Friday, Dec. 11, when they host Jacobs. Carl Moesche *5- Mike Burgdorf leaves his defenders behind asd scares on a lay up in a recent McHenry practice.
