0 * Richmond Advances In Bob £arey scored two touchdowns and Paul Horak added another to lead Rich mond-Burton to a 21-6 state Class 2A quarterfinal victory over Polo on Saturday. The triumph earned the unbeaten Rockets, 11-0, a Saturday date at Danville where they'll meet Schlarman, the defending Class 2A champions. The Rocket defense shared the spotlight with Carey as they held Polo to only 96- yards total offense. Richmond-Burton took a 7- 0 lead early in the first quarter when Carey blasted through for a 13-yard touch down run. Brad Curtis added the extra point kick. The Rockets' Scott Jones set up the score when he interecepted a Mike Groen pass at the Marco 18-yard line. Carey then scored two plays later with 9:22 left in the first quarter. After a scoreless second period, Richmond-Burton tallied again in the third oo a 75-yard run by Horak. Curtis added the extra point kick. The Marco's finally got on the scoreboard with 2:32 left in the third period. Henry Grobe snared a 12-yard pass from Groen, cutting the Rocket lead to 14-6. Richmond-Burton was called for holding the touchdown play, and Polo was given an opportunity to kick off from their own 45- yard line with the wind at its back. But the Marco punter elected not to boot an onside kick. The Rockets failed to move on the subsequent possession and punted the ball away. Polo's Jim Vock took the ball at midfield and raced behind a wall of blockers for an apparent touchdown. But the score was nullified by two Marco penalties and Polo started all over from its own 31-yard line. Two plays later Brad Christensen picked off a Groen pass and dashed 50-yards for an ap parent scdre. But that, too, was called back by a penalty. Denied a score on that {day, the Rockets went back to work with 11:15 left to play. Carey ran the ball on 11 of the next 13 plays dwing the Richmond-Burton drive, finally soring on a 4th-and-2 at the Marco six-yard line with 6:05 remaining in the game. A Curtis kick made the score 21-6. Carey picked up 112 yards rushing on 32 carries, while Horak had 71-yards on ground, despite his 75-; touchdown rim. The quarterback was sack four times while attempting' to pass. "We made it tough on them at times," said Polo coach Dwight Sellers. Overall, Richmond had 194 yards rushing and 20-yards in the air for a total of 214 yards in total offense. Polo had 52 yards on the ground and 44 in the air for only 96 yards. "We stopped their option cold," said Rocket coach J. Randy Hofman. "Brian O'Toole and Grant Urban did a great job. PAOE 7 - PLAINDEALER - WF1 >NERI>AY.
