Doctor Talk By Harold B. Ligon, M.D. "Doctor, will you write my prescription in generic form, so that 1 can get it cheaper?" The increasing cost of drugs in recent years has put a strain on the budget of the average medical patient. This is especially true of senior citizens who, in general, require more medi cation and have actually less income with which to buy. The result is that they are forced to sacrifice many of the comforts they worked hard to realize. This financial crunch has precipitated (and rightfully so) much coverage via the news media, drug promo tional agencies, public health officials, bureacuratic politi cal factions, etc., extolling the virtues of generic drugs, usually with great gusto-- sometimes taking physicians who write trade-name drugs to task--and at times, even implying collusion between doctor and drug company. My philosophy in general is in support of "generics"-in the vast majority of cases-- because of the economy in volved. ("Generics" are phar maceutical preparations of chemicals themselves-and sold as such--usually cheaper than "trade-names"-- pre parations of the same chemicals, given different names by different drug companies.) While, in principle, I sup port "generics", 1 feel com pelled to point out that there are some aspects of the generic approach about which the general public hasn't been told. 1 have only one real re servation about "generics", and 1 think it 's worthy of considerable thought. When I write a "trade-name" pre scription, 1 know what pre paration my patient will receive; however, if I write "generic", control of the medication my patient gets passes from my hands to those of the pharmacist. F o r t u n a t e l y , c e r t i f i e d pharmacists in this country generally perform with high professional integrity. The success of the "generics" will depend upon ethics! Holiday Drive For Food Baskets One of the biggest drives for holiday food baskets ever conducted locally for the leas fortunate of the community begins this weekend In McHenry. Sharing in the extensive program are these member* of the Junior Luther league from Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran church, David Hanson, left, Mktp Cody, Deana Behm and Julie Sande. On Runday, Nov. 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. they will be ioined by other league members in holding a Thanksgiving "Can Can". They will be "dancing" through the neighbhornoods near the church asking for canned goods to be given to needy families in the church and community. Grades 5 through 8 will be Involved In the "can can", with a special surprise given to the class that collects the most cans of food. Those who like to bake their own bread always remember to place a little dish of water in the oven to keep the crust from getting too hard. WHO KNOWS? 1.
