In the beef department you'll find a good buy on corned beef and some stores carry both corned round and brisket. When purchasing a brisket, select a flat cut since it consists of one solid muscle with a mini mum of fat. Pork prices continue to be stable, but look for specials on pork loins. You'll also find chops and roasts featured as weekly spe cials. The blade end or rib end roast has more fat but less bone, while the sirloin end has more bone and less fat. The end chops are excellent for barbecuing. Turkeys and fryers are excel lent buys right now, as are liver and franks. At the produce counter, you'll find all the fall fruits and vege tables in good supply and at affordable prices, with cabbage, white and sweet potatoes, car rots, apples and greens especial ly good buys. PAGr.. . - PLAINDEALER • Safety Hints 3000000000000 by secretary of State Jim Edgar Did you know the No. 1 cause of death for children over the age of 1 is motor vehicle accidents? Nearly 1,500 children under 5 die and 60,000 are injured an nually in auto accidents in the United States. Experts say that more than 80 percent of fatalities could be avoided by using effective child restraint systems. Fewer than 10 percent of U.S. children ride in them. Please heed these rules: 1 - Children under 5, or weighing less than 40 pounds, should ride in a child restraint. 2. - The safest place in the car for a child is in the back seat. 3. - If no child restraint is available, children should use the car safety belt. This is much safer than riding unrestrained. 4 - A child held in an i iviuAi, XOV kMBt:. i.C, life! adult's lap is not safe from injury. In many accidents the adult crushes the child when he or she is thrown forward on top of the youngster. 5. - Children should not ride in the luggage com partment of a station wagon or hatchback. 6. - Hatchbacks always should be kept closed when children are riding in the back seat. If you have any questions about the Secretary of State's office, please feel free to use our toll-free telephone number (800-252- 8980). (A copy of the Rules of the Road will be sent to you upon request. Write to Jim Edgar, Secretary of State, Springfield, 111., 62756). Remember your shut-in friends during the holidays. Decorate small food con tainers, such as jars and bottles and put some hard candies (or some homemake) or cookies or even make a dried arrangement in the clear jar. It will bring much joy.
