FRONT STREET McHEMY 385-0882 m by Joey Sasoo CONFIDENTIAL REPORT: Television soaps are so full of wife- swapping, bed-hopping, incest and adultery that Americans no longer know the difference between right and wrong, charge scores of angry clergymen. They blame the nation's declining morals and mushrooming divorce rate on the people who make the soaps. "The generation we're raising today doesn't know what's moral and what isn't. And the reason for that is what I call pornography on the television screen," the Rev. Jerry FatweH, leader of the Moral Majority, fumed in a recent interview. "Those soap operas in the afternoon are a prime example. They teach women how to run around on their husbands and get away with it." Rev. John Smith of the Evangelism for Christ Church in Miami claims that soap operas have led to a decline in moral values. "Immorality, cheating and marriage break-ups are on the rise. And therfe's no doubt that soap operas contribute to it," Rev. Smith told me. "Watching these shows has become part of the environment for a lot of people. It's a habit. Anything that one sees, hears and watches every day becomes part of the sub conscious and then people start molding their lives after it." TV BACKSTAGE: Who's the sex iest man on . TV? If 12,000 Englishmen--and women-- can't be wrong, the vote goes to Robin Ellis, star of the 29-hour TV series, "Poldark," coming soon to our local TV stations. In this BBC-TV/London Films pro duction, Ellis apparently got everybody excited with his lov ing, dueling, poaching, smuggl ing and wenching in 18th cen tury England. What is it about him that makes millions of female hearts throb at the very V Robin EHis sight of him? One critic said, "It's the way he knits his brow, grits his teeth and works his jaw muscles." TV CLOSEUP: Superstar Marie Osmond says that having nine kids--just like her mom did--would suit her just fine. Although Marie, 22, is still looking for Mr. Right, she admits she's already thinking ahead to the joys of motherhood. In fact, her role in the TV movie, "Side By Side," in which she plays her own mother, has convinced Marie that kids are for her--and the more the merrier. "Doing it reconfirmed the fact that some day I want my own family," Marie told me, "and if I do what my mother did in having nine children, that's OK too.". . . Three television stars took to the streets of Studio City, Calif., to protest the sale of "look-alike drugs." The pills look like popular stimulants or depressants but can be bought freely because they are non narcotic and do not require a prescription. "It's so stupid, so in credibly thoughtless--playing games and pretending to be tak ing real drugs," said Daniel J. Travanti of "Hill Street Blues" during a demonstration outside the newly opened Over-the- Counter Drug Store. Veronica Hamel, also from the series, said it bothers/tier that salesmen of phony drugs "make it awfully appealing^ get high." Jack Klugman, who plays the medical examiner on "Quincy," urged that such drugs be outlawed in California'.*" TV COMfULOO SERVICES, INC
